March leaves with babies

Silver Spring, MD

Please indulge me as I post this picture of my babies. So far, this has been my most successful attempt at propagation. Tomorrow I begin to seperate the largest plants from the moms.

One of them is. I wasn't going to do everything. Just the larger ones. There are some that the root system has outgrown the cups.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

WOW, you have some fabulous babies there!! Way to Grow! I'm glad your new system with the capillary mat is working out well for you. :-)

Pretty please, if you get extra babies, would you be willing to put my name on a 'Buckeye Bouquet' and a 'First Robin'? LOL I can't believe I'm already starting wish lists for fall trades.... then again, I guess I was putting spring entries into my trade tracker last November!

One thought.... If you're repotting any of the ones that have very little green on the leaves, I would consider putting the mother leaf and the babies into a bigger pot all together rather than separating those nearly white babies... I have not had good luck with mostly-white little plantlets. Of course, with your green thumb, you'd probably figure out a way to make them thrive! :-)

Nanna~ What a great looking group! I'm finally getting babies on my leaves and I think it's so amazing!! TFS

I have quite a few leaves now with babies coming along. I had been wondering when to start potting them on their own, but you answered my question.

Do you always cut off the top of the mother leaf? What is the purpose of that?

I started to toss a couple of leaves the other day that had done nothing for a really long time, and found that there were babies on the back side of them. Glad I happened to notice.

I have some fancier leaves and newer leaves that haven't done anything yet, but now that I know I can do this, I am much more patient.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Cutting off the tip of the mother leaf stops the leaf from continuing to grow, so it can put its energy into making babies instead.

You're right -- it does take patience -- but it's such fun when those little ears start poking up!

Good morning Jill,
It really is fun to check for new babies. Sometimes you can just see a tiny new dot of brighter green -- and you do the AV dance. Finally having gotten my act together with these AVs thanks to you and others is really special.

I've had to continue to work with the sunlight, as there is no way to put up the artificial lights at this point in my life, but that has made it even more fun for me. I've lost a few leaves, but other people lose leaves, too, so I don't feel bad about that anymore. Well, not toooooo bad!

Have a good day and thanks again for your help.

Jill is right about cutting the tops of the leaves helps to put the energy of the plant into the leaves.

Jill I remember about green or dark red needing to be on the babies before seperating them. Thanks for the reminder. As I look at the plants there are only a very few that I had intended on repotting. I am very excited about the two Buckeye's that I have. I understand that they are very healthy plants and grow well. I also remember from a thread a long time ago that you liked Buckeyes and had already put your name on them. I will certainly put your name on the First Robin as well.

You're the best!! Thank you. Have fun repotting these pretty babies!

Nanna
you use a cap. mat under all of your leaves?

Red Oak, NC(Zone 7b)

Wow! Lots and lots of babies! Wonderful growing!

Silver Spring, MD

I did on this group. I only have one piece of cap mat. I really like it. I think I will get some more soon. I really like it for leaves, new plants, and suckers. All rooting things.

Thanks achoo

Good too know I think the consistancy that it provides is a significant factor.

Silver Spring, MD

I love to watch the babies grow But I think I love to see the soil puff up on the surface while the little ones are trying to push through.
