Nice pics! The Tiger Swallowtail is so awesome. I've had one visiting the last couple of days, only it likes my butterfly bush.

That picture is great!!! I've been seeing a Swallowtail flying around my yard for the past couple of weeks, but it would never land. Today, finally it landed for just a few seconds. I had my camera. I got a shot. But not nearly as good and as close as yours, so I don't even know what kind of Swallowtail it was. It was on my milkweed. I'll post my picture, but again...NOTHING as good as your picture, hill5422

Oops...my picture didn't post after I previewed it. Let's try this again LOL

Wow! Great picture!

Yikes, found this buried on page three...I gotta do a better job of keeping up with my own threads!

Thanks for the kind words regarding the pics. I even surprised myself with how they turned out and I only started photography in the past few weeks when my DH handed me a digital camera and told me to go take some pictures! I did know that before I started, I needed to take LOTS of pics of the subject, because only one or two might be useable, and statistics held for me--those were the two that came out. So you know that there were many other pics I took of that swallowtail that DIDN'T turn out as useable in any way.

PiggyPoo (love that name!), I am guessing from your pic that your swallowtail is a Giant Swallowtail. I think if you zoomed in on the butterfly and cropped your pic, you'd have a great one yourself.

What's all this talk I hear about a photography contest???? I am ready to enter, LOL!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

hilll5422, go to the home page. at the top of the screen there are some tabs. click on "extras". scroll down til you see photo contests. I think there should be some threads associated with the contests, don't remember for sure.

Yes, PiggyPoo (I laugh every time I see this name!) you do have a Giant Swallowtail. Get yourself some Rue and you might could have baby GST's.

Tucson, AZ(Zone 9a)

KK, I do have some rue planted, but nobody ever bothers with it :( I think it just me too tucked away within some other plants. But last year, it was pretty visable and still..no visitors. Today he was back again. He spent a very very long time eating at my Desert Willow tree. I looked like a lunatic out there trying to get a good picture, but I was facing the wrong direction for one, and he was pretty high up in my tree. I'll post one of them that I got, but it wasn't great. He sure was peeerty, though.

Maybe that's the problem, it's a HE. I have some Rue tucked away too and thought they would never find it and low and behold this year it did. HOW I don't know!

I didn't get any cats from it tho because I didn't bring the eggs in and when I checked the only one I had seen was gone. I'm sure they'll be back tho because it's early.

Tucson, AZ(Zone 9a)

LOL because it's a "HE". That was great!!

This just did not turn out well :(

Oh, but I get the idea! I love the Desert Willow! I've got a tiny one that a local Dave's friend started as a cutting. What she did was some weird thing of taking 2 cuttings and tying them together and then rooting them. They didn't have roots when I planted them but one stalk died and the other has grown into a little tree. It needs to be pruned next year tho because it has a strange long branch on it. I can't wait until it gets big enough to bloom.

Actually PPoo ;-), it is a nice shot. The color scheme is gorgeous. The desert willow leaves and flowers with the butterfly contrasted against the sky are just beautiful.

KKB--we have desert willow cuttings going in a mist system and no, they are not tied together. That was interesting to read. Anyway, it is our first year to try to root them. I just love them and hope some root for us.

I have 2 Desert Willows. I got them from a program here in Tucson, called "Trees For Tucson". It was put on through the electric company, to help get more trees planted. You can only get 2 trees, per residence, and they have to be planted in specific areas of your yard. They had a list of like 4 or 5 different trees to choose from. The only thing you had to pay was $5 per tree, for delivery. How cool was that??? They were pretty tiny when I got them, but have really taken off these past couple of years.
