One place I read that orchid cactus are good for warm, dry places...then I read they need humidity and should be kept moist but not wet.
Which??? HELP!!!!
Sharon, just starting out with jungle cactus...
Confused newbie
Epi's probably do need humidity in their natural environment where their roots are usually sitting in the cracks and crevices of large trees or on the jungle floor; however, planting their roots in well-draining soil eliminates the need for humidity. I grow them successfully here in Southern California where there is very little humidity. You can grow them as well in filtered sun or bright shade in a container with well-draining soil. The soil should not dry out or remain wet.

Wow!
Thank you SO much for taking the time to list all those websites.
If you can grow 'em in SoCa, maybe I can too, here in AZ.
I've been spraying/ misting the leaves and the area to keep it as humid as possible....is that unneeded??
Hi Sharon, I'm sure you can grow them just fine in AZ. Maybe some AZ growers will surface and give you some tips about what they do to care for their Epi's. As long as your medium is moist but well-draining, there is no need for misting. If you see them wrinkle, then you can use your garden hose to mist them when you water. You may need to use a shade cloth or keep them in the shade of trees in order to protect them from your hot AZ sun.
