what is your favorite blooming plant this time of year?

Renton, WA(Zone 8a)

I have asiatic monte negro lily and dianthus, but not much else yet. Would like to add more flowers that are in bloom this time of year. What are your favorites?

Olympia, WA

My Costco peonies are blooming their ever loving brains out right now - love the color and smell and robust behaviors! Sarah Bernhardt is her name!

Duvall, WA(Zone 7b)

We have several peonies from A&D peonies in Clearview that are quite delicious this time of year. My favorite of them is Henry Bockstoce (see pic). We are also enjoying Mrs Bradshaw and Lady Strathaden (sp), both of the Geum family.

Roses, what else? Lots else really.

Renton, WA(Zone 8a)

My roses aren't blooming yet. They were pruned heavily last year by the person I got them from, so maybe that is why they seem to be later than everyone elses....

That's a rough question! LOL
So many to choose from. I think I will go with foxglove and then I have this blooming just today. Can you guess what it is?

I took this picture several weeks ago.
I just love watching the bees pollinate these guys. Hours of fun.

I'm a daylily freak, so my favorite blooming right now is 'Gillian.'

GardenGuy - that is an awesome plant!!!!!!!!! OMG!

My only exposure to Sauromatum (sp?) was back in the days (1960s) of taking a class from one Dr. Baastian Meeuse (sp?) at the UW. He was the voodoo lily guru of that time. As the result, I got a bulb and grew it in my house!!!!!!!!! I recall the leaf appearance - and it was that, more than anything else in your strategically cropped photo, that tripped the memory trigger. I might need to give it consideration once again......yours is just spectacular as long as one stays upwind, for sure!

I would have to say my yellow roses. We whacked heck out of all 10 of our rose bushes last year after we moved in and they decided to be productive this year so they don't get ripped out of the ground by my chainsaw hefting toerope happy hubby. The yellow rose bush is so overloaded with buds that it will be more yellow blooms than green leaves that you see when they finally all pop.
I really need to get some pictures uploaded! I'm so proud of the HUGE amount of work we have accomplished.
But, this weekend is another project. Putting the hummingbird garden together in the back yard.
We moved into WA 2 years ago, and my kids thought everyone up here was crazy as loons for being out when it rained. Now I'm one of those people! Rain or shine, I'm out in the yard when I get home from work at night.

Tri-Cities, WA(Zone 7b)

My favorite late spring bloomers are my oranges. They can be kept with a bit of care (and selection of hardier varieties) on the west side of the mountains. Here I have to give them a bit more protection, but the beauty and scent are wonderful. This one's been blooming for the past month, and still going:

I really love the peonies, but I have to say these guys are looking great in their first ever bloom - as big as cantaloupes! One even tried to bloom at Christmas.

I keep seeing the most beautiful flowers in peoples yards. They are tall and they look like rocket popsicles, green, orange, red, yellow. What are they? Anyone know?

edited to add:

Oh hey, I found it. They are called torch lilies, or red hot pokers. They are so interesting. They really do look like something grown at the wonka factory.

Thanks Mendy and that is a beautiful shot of Gillian. I do like day lilies and only have the common variety. I should get a few more.

Thanks for sharing the experience you had back in the 60's...I can only imagine that they were quite the novelty back then. If I would have seen these guys as a child I think I would have become a Botanist Or a Sci Fi script writer of some sorts...LOL

galega- Love those Salmon poppies.

Lebanon, OR

Right now it is the Japanese iris and the Oriental Poppies, as both are in full color in the beds facing west. On the north it is many different shrubs that bloom along with the clemetis.

Hope this helps.

I love the poppies have about 12 different named ones.

Gardenguykin-

The Dracunuclus I got in trade from you last year bloomed.. made a very nice flower. I couldnt believe the stink.. Lucky it wasnt blooming in the house like other stinky aroids ive grown.

If you like the flower that you get with Dracunculus.. grow the Amorphophallus konjac bulbs I gave you for a few years... Those will probly need to be lifted during the winter.. and when the bulb gets big .. you get a nice giant flower.

The only plant I have blooming right now is Lamium "Beacon Silver" unless you want to count those darned Himalayan Blackberries that have my house surrounded! The Lamium is very pretty and the blackberries would be if they weren't so invasive. I just hate it when they chase me to the house. LOL Dotti

Great question! Especially since I weed-eated for 7 hours today & was feeling pretty rotten about all the weeds that are in bloom and/or ready to set seed...
This query got me thinking not only about what my favorite is, but also how many things are in bloom. We have just finished about 9 days straight of rain and with the mild temperature (60's), it has created the perfect environment for speedy-weed growth.
Even though I am a native, I still marvel at the wide variety of plants that grow & thrive here.
So - back to the question: there are 45 different plants in bloom now on my property, which makes it hard to choose. I picked three: my 52 yr. old mock orange (ultra-fragrant); the honeysuckles, and a little (8") white-flowered rock garden plant called "Rhodohypoxis baurii".
Thanks for asking - it gave me a different perspective on the gardens. All the work to be done can be daunting to the point where it becomes too easy to see the faults, and not enjoy the dividends. I am going back outside to stick my face in the Mock Orange!

Thanks Chris
I'm looking forward to the blooms of our wonderful trade.

Its hard to know for sure, but could that be Lupine? Mine are blooming right now.

It's hard to say my favorites, so much is in bloom right now. Of course, the roses... This white one is Madam Plantier. The yellow rose in the foreground is Teasing Georgia.

In the sun, my favorites are Astrantia (all types), the late blooming Cornus Kousa, roses and poppies. Here is a pic of my new bronze leaf Bishop type Dahlia ( inset is P.'Brilliant'). There are 3 flower heads on the Acanthus Mollis and 7 on my A. Spinosa. This will bloom in a couple of weeks.

In the shade, my Dicentra Spectabilis has been putting on a show since mid-April. The aroids are in full bloom now--Jack and his cousin Pinellia.

Angel Rose is another favorite. I grew them from seeds and there are 4 or 5 different pink shaded ones in this area.

wow, galega, I love your poppies! Is it too late to get them in the ground this year? I was never able to grow them before (in the south), so I'm a little intimidated by them,,,, what varieties do you suggest?

West Richland, WA(Zone 6b)

sweet william- they stand so tall and smell so sweet and last a long time

Lakebay, WA

my yellow roses are on overdrive I think. absolutely gorgeous and so fragrant! my hubby cut a bunch of them off the other day along with some pink ones and it fills up the room with their beautiful smell. I couldn't find a vase big enough and had to use a HUGE southwestern pot to hold them all.
I can't wait for the dahlias to burst open. Several of ours are 3ft tall or better and have small buds. It's like Christmas only I can't open any of the presents grrrr!

Seattle, WA

Some of my favorites: Moonraker Cape Fuchsia, Devil's Tears Fuchsia, Dizzy Lizzy, Ballerina Blue Fuchsia, and the Asiatic hybrid Lillles.

Peach Bellflower and Hot Lips Salvia are also very, very nice.

Albany, OR(Zone 8a)

DAHLIAS, of course!!!
Then my 2 different honeysuckles! What great smell!

Now the fuschia are about burned out here (too hot for them), but the pomegranate is in full glory, the water lilies are beautiful, the miniature roses are on their third flush, and the bedding plants have been blooming for months.

Looking forward to the cannas which now have flower clusters about to open.

How can you possibly choose favorites?!

Lakebay, WA

Dahlias are starting to open and the vibrant colors just make me grin from ear to ear! Roses are still on overdrive. I can't wait for the fall and getting Tagro on their feet. They were so pitiful and straggly last year when we moved into the house. With the exception of two bushes, we have 8 that are pumping out oodles of rosy goodness.
