I hope somebody knows... because it is popping up all over my side bed, too... and I don't even remember planting it! It does not look like seedlings of the purple basil I grew last year.

Could it be Red Perilla (aka Shiso)? Check out this picture from PF, http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/70553/

Critter is right it is Shiso - eat some and you will know it isn't basil :)

YOU gave me this plant, didn't you??? I don't even remember putting it in last year, but clearly it was somewhere near the side of the house! LMK if you want some seedlings!

Yes, it definitely doesn't smell/taste like basil! Pretty foliage, though.

I grew some seeds this year and have it next to my nasturtium in a container but now I know where to get more!
P.S. Nancy mentioned wanting some mint so I said to ask you - did she? Sorry for the hijack City..

Kim you are speaking to a person who is notorious for hijacking threads! lol
So you guys are telling me I planted this from a seed.

Sylvia--it could be red shiso if Bob (Throneofyord) gave it too you at the spring round up.

Critter and Kim--the Texas forum is widely known for thread hijackings--we're used to it and they generally go to som very interesting places too!

LOL

I thought I'd continued the hijacking earlier, but my post didn't go through.... Kim, I haven't heard anything from Nancy about wanting mints, but she is more than welcome to some! Hopefully she'll Dmail me... oh, are you talking about Levilyla or NMinMD?

Sylvia, it could also be that it planted itself from a seed. It definitely self sowed freely along the edge of my bed.... probably would've been all over the bed, but I think I sprinkled some Preen (germination inhibitor) down early this spring... I must have missed the outer edge!

I am confused ... the plants you showed in the pic from the plant files look more like this amaranthus that self sowing it around here. I am talking about the Curly purple basil.

Sylvia, the plant in your photo doesn't really look like basil to me, and I thought it looked like the PF pic. Pinch off a leaf, smell it, taste it (shiso is edible), and see if you still think it is basil...

Well my Shiso (from seed) looks like Sylvia's picture. Here is mine. It just rained and it was taken in the dark but you can still see (hopefully) they are the same.

Kim it does look more like your plant. I just wonder where it came from. So Kim its Shiso too? ...what do you do with it? The plant file says the seeds are poisonious.

Ijamsville, MD(Zone 6b)

Critter - Nminmd - I can always take some of mine over. She only wants the "regular" mint.

Sylvia - we just add the leaves to salads (along with the nasturtium leaves), chop them up for herb butter, use on sandwiches with arugula or basil... nothing exciting I suppose. I have heard the green one is stronger. I will look up on the seed package tommorrow and see what it says. I did see a mention about aggressively self sowing - that would explain a few things :)

Thanks Kim but I am afraid to eat it. lol

I dont remember anyone giving me any seed at the RU. there was ruffled basil in that pot last year, but it died on me. ... I thought.
now its back?

Ijamsville, MD(Zone 6b)

OK, get someone else to eat it! If the basil was in the pot last year it probably reseeded. How about this, take off a leaf and crush it up and smell. Otherwise dig it up and send it here.....

LOL@ KIm! Kim I know I sound distrubed, but the more I talk about it, the more I remember ... ok already! I will crush and smell only! I will not eat it! Is it supposed to smell like my regular Basil? LOL, I know by now you want to kick my butt for for bein stupid! LMAO!
