Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Very Pretty ! Thanks for sharing !

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks. I do have a question that you guys will surely know the answer to. How do you know if your AV is a chimera or just another stiped AV?

Jesse

Hello,

Very nice photos! TFS them with us!

What a great camera. The colors are so beautiful and the detail is wonderful.

What's a chimera?

A: A Chimera is a special breed of African Violet. It is a spontaneous mutation resulting in an AV with a bloom which has a bi-colored 'Pinwheel' appearance. Chimera AV's cannot be propagated by leaf, but rather must be reproduced from a crown or peduncle cutting. More on the subject here [HYPERLINK@davesgarden.com] and here and information on propagation of a Chimera can be found here [HYPERLINK@davesgarden.com]

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

This camera was a Christmas present not this past Christmas, but the one before. I had just started indoor gardening and I wanted to be able to take photos of my plants. I wanted one that would do the really close up shots. So we looked around and compared and this is the one that I liked the best. I have had it over a year now and it just keeps on taking great photos. It is an HP Photosmart 945. I'm sure HP has since released a newer model but I sure do love this one.

About the Chimera, I know what it is and how it is grown but that does not answer my question. Maybe I phrased it wrong. What I mean is "how do I recongnize a chimera from any other AV? If I go into a store and I see AVs for sale, and a couple of them are striped looking, how do I know if it is a chimera or not?

Jesse

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

That's a good question, and I'm not sure there's an easy answer. I think chimera stripes tend to go all the way to the ends of the petals, whereas "regular" AVs tend to have a thin edging of the color that's on either side of the stripes going all the way around the outside of the petal. But I'm sure there are exceptions to this. If the plant will only propagate true from a sucker rather than a leaf, then it is a chimera by definition.... but I'm not sure there's a definitive way to recognize a chimera on sight.

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

I know. I mean, if I put a leaf down and it does not make babies, how do I know if that is the reason.

Jesse

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Oh, a leaf from a chimera will make babies just fine! But the babies probably won't bloom true to the parent, although I think somebody posted that some small percentage of chimera leaves will produce chimera plants.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

If you look threw old Av magazines, books you see so many different looking Chimera's Some don't even look like the have strips when you get to doubles, fantasy, Blossoms with colofrul eyes and edging.
If you do a search threw FC you will find many different look Chimeria's, on Ebay , every where.
Last I read up to 50 percent of Chimera's progated by leaf may bloom true. Though a higher percentage of them bloom true from bloom stalks, sucker's they do not always. The stripes do not always go to the edge when the blossoms has a edging .
There are lot's of example's and more Chimera's everyday ! So exciting. All Chimera's are Sports.
** This wonderful Chimera has white stripes but green ruffled edge the stripes don't go to the end.
Angel's Petticoats (S. Sorano) Double chimera

There are so many different looking Chimera's out there ! The stripes do not have to go to the edge of the flower.

lovesdaylilies,

The name of that AV is Marshlands.
Marshlands (5517) 09/16/1983 (B. Sisk) Double pink/darker eye. Variegated dark green, cream, and rose, pointed. Large

Oh this is great. It is going to be a large one. I've been looking for large ones. I have a few but I didn't know that this one was one.

Jesse

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Jesse I read many place about growing LARGE plants. and one thing they do is take flowers off while it is growing . And they use food with higher first number or equal numbers. And they trans-plant a lot.
I think in Rob's Violet Barn has a thing on growing large plants, and maybe AVSA. Grow to show book might, I know a lot of AV books do
I have one plant that is doing really good growing pretty big fast,
Guelph's Christmas (9120) 04/20/2002 (J. Brownlie/Guelph University) Semidouble-double fuchsia large frilled star/thin white-green edge. Medium green, quilted, glossy, wavy, serrated/red back. Large
It's nothing like a show plant and I did not take flowers off but it's the largest plant I have right now. I will have to measure and see !

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

Wow. I bet it is a beauty. I would love to see what it looks like if you take some photos.

All of them are beautiful Jesse!

I need computer lessons to learn how you do that with your pictures!

Jesse who is second on the right ?

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

That is Mickey Mouse on the second right. I took a couple more photos of him to show you the whole plant. I love this little plant.

oops sorry meant second row on the left.
I have a Micky Mouse I have been fighting with. I bought a plant from Bluebirds , gave Mom away and grew baby. But never has the baby grown nice. I keep trans-planting it and now it in natural light . Just never been happy with this one. Yes couple years ago grew a nice one always full of flowers sent it to my sister. Always wanted another but no luck like the one I had a couple years ago :((

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

This one has not been a problem for me but Fantasy Halo was. I tried everything to get that little thing to grow. I put a wick in it, I repotted it, I made sure it was not too wet or too dry. It just did not like me. The other one that I'm struggling with is Definitely Darryl. I'm not sure if it will make it or not but I'm trying. I think I'm going to mix up some plant food and give some to all of them tonight. It has been a while and they may be hungry.

This one is Chico. I finally found its tag. Remember we discussed it on another forum. Here is a better photo.

Here is an example of what I was asking earlier. This one looks striped so how do we know if it is a Chimera or not?

I'm no expert but I don't think so. FC says
Optimara Chico (9122) 05/29/2002 (R. Holtkamp) Single white sticktite pansy/wide blue ruffled edge. Medium green, plain, glossy, hairy, scalloped. Standard
To me it some what looks like but I guess not it can be progated by leaf / and not reg. as one.
I am so happy Eunice sent me some leaves of Chico ! It's so pretty.
Here is FC picture.

I was going off of what you mentioned in another thread about what plant it was. Remember this thread? http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/608078/ That is where I got the name Chico from and I had misplaced the tag so I thought it was Chico. Then when I found the tag I stuck it in this plant thinking it was Chico. I guess if this is not Chico I will have to wait for it to bloom to make sure. Also, since this plant has stripes on it, how do I tell if it is a Chimera or not. I'm still trying to learn how to identify Chimeras from other striped AVs.

Jesse

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Jesse I think it is Chico just has more purple in it . This happens a lot to flowers.

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes I've noticed that the same plant will have just a slight bit of color difference sometimes than another one of the same kind. But I love them all and I know you do too. What great joy they bring to all of us.

My neighbors keep telling me to set up a little stand in front of my house and sell some of my plants. I'm not sure if it is a good idea or not. I'm kind of rolling the idea around a bit. What do you all think? I will make sure that if I do I will save my best ones for you guys. When is the next plant trade?

Jesse
