See What I Did

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

I went to the thrift store and bought some cups and saucers and brought them home and started drilling holes for drainage. I think it is really cute.

It is cute, makshi!! Aren't they hard to drill without breaking??

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

We have a glass drill bit and it was pretty easy.

Their beautiful ! I've never had them drilled before. I 've just put the plastic wicked pot into the cup.
So your plant is planted right into the cup ? Sure looks like a Happy Healthy ! Beautiful plant !
Great growing and pretty ideas !

Ali,

Yes, it is planted right in the cup.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Fabulous!

You know, we also must know the name of that gorgeous AV... love the foliage!

I've been using some of the cups from my grandma's china set to hold AVs that I'm displaying on the back of the kitchen island. I discovered that half cup containers (like applesauce comes in) with holes poked in the bottom fit perfectly in those cups... but I can't bring myself to take a drill to them! LOL

Critter,

No I wouldn't drill my grandmother's cups either but these were from a thrift store. The AV is Def. Darryl.

Diane it's a beatiful plant ! Looks really nice in your new cup and saucer. Did you do any other ones ! It enjoyable to decorate with African violets !

Wow. That is beautiful. I've done that with some items too, drill holes in them. It is a great idea. You did a wonderful job. Thanks for sharing.

Perfect. It looks perfect!

I'm nursing a tiny plantlet of Definitely Darryl... it has just one tiny leaf, but that leaf looks good! Now that I see how gorgeous it could be when it grows up, it will get even more TLC!

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

I have had the same problem with Definitely Darryl. Is it one that is hard to grow? I have tried most everything to keep it alive and I think it might make it. Wonder why it is so hard to grow.

Oh that is too cute! What a great idea! How do you drill holes in that stuff?

TFS!

Jesse, mine was a tiny plantlet when Lorry sent it to me, and it lost a couple of leaves due to hot conditions en route. So I can't say whether it's a hard to grow variety or not, although I've had trouble propagating some of the variegated minis.

Joanne, I think you need to use a special bit on your drill for glass or ceramic. As Makshi said, it's better to attempt this on thrift store pieces in case of breakage.

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, you have to buy a special bit. I bought the one meant for cement. That was the closest thing I could find to porcelin. And it worked.

I've read instructions that said to keep a ceramic bit wet while working in order to draw heat (from friction) away from the tip so the heat doesn't cause the piece to crack. I remember seeing a demonstration of drilling holes in a porcelain plate where the person made a ring of vaseline an inch or so out from the point that was to be drilled and then put water into the well created by the vaseline. However, I've seen other demos where people just put a ceramic bit on the drill and go at it. Perhaps it depends on the hardness and/or the heat sensitivity of your piece... or maybe some people just do things the hard way, LOL.

(Can you tell I watch waaaaay too much HGTV??)

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

I always do that when drilling on ceramic. I just put some water on the spot where I'm drilling and keep putting it there. So yes, keeping it wet is a good idea.

The way I do it is to put cooking oil in a circle of molding clay and than drill. That is how I learned to do it.

Ask Spider about Darryl. She is the one that sent me this little beauty. I haven't so far had any problem with him.

Excellent! Great job. Someone on Ebay was selling AVs in tea cups but I wasn't sure they'd drilled them 1st- really good way to show off your AVs!

I will have to make a query at the local hardware store and ask about that bit. Thanks a bunch for the info!
