Decades ago, when Dutch Elm disease killed every elm in the city they were replaceed with another kind of elm that is now on it's last legs. It sends tough suckers up into the front yards/gardens. It's like the mother monster in the Alien movie, wanting to insure it's survival. What can I use to kill it's offspring that won't migrate to other plants? These suckers are tough & woody & repeated cutting them back doesn't deter them. Weed whacking doesn't even help.
Thanks, Gloria
Ugly street tree & it's offspring
Gloria, are you referring to Siberian Elm? If so, I pull the seedlings up by hand after a nice rain and get the saplings with a weed wrench.

This is the tool our Forest Preserve District is now using. I have the light verson but we also have a medium. Phenomenal torque with this tool and people well under 150 lbs can easily use it successfully.
Equilbrium, thanks for the link. I'll contact them. And yes, the trees are Siberian Elms. Someone really did a great sales job on the city because they were planted throughout our Frederick Law Olmstead network of parks and parkways. They are horribly shaped and very dirty.(they drop branches, mostly on parked cars). They leaf late and don't lose their leaves 'till mid winter which is actually pretty after a snow fall. until a limb collapses under the weight of the snow. I really shouldn't complain even though it is invasive. Hey, it's still a tree. Thanks again.
