Big Blue Liriope in Full Sun in Dallas?

Fairview, TX(Zone 7b)

Hello all, I live in the Dallas area. A landscaper recommended Big Blue Liriope for full sun in the Dallas area. I am hesitant because I read that it prefers shade. Has anyone had experience (good or bad) with blue liriope in full sun? What other alternatives would you recommend? Thanks!!!

Hi, Rosie, I live in Dallas and my yard is lined with Big Blue Liriope, the giant liriope, if that's what you're referring to. It gets both sun and shade and are doing fine. I also have the regular Liriope in both sun and shade. You're welcome to come and take a look.

I have it, too, and it seems to do well in shade or sun. They bloom much nicer in sun, but are deeper green in shade.
Either way, they are happy no matter where you plant them.

They have roots similar to a daylily(little potato tuber thingys on the ends of the roots) so they are very waterwise and a tough plant.

Thanks pcobb and seedpicker_TX. I feel better about going with Big Blue Liriope. We're planting about 900 of them so I want to feel really good about them. :)

Ooh....900, that makes my back hurt just thinking about it! LOL!

They are actually really pretty when in bloom...

Taylor, did you get your big blue liriope at Garrison's? I saw pots of it there on Friday and noticed that they use it a bunch in Landscaping designs . I don't remember seeing it at any other nurseries. I am thinking about using David Garrison to draw up a design for the front yard and I am sure it will be one of the plants they recommend.

Good luck. You'll love them.

Hey girl!

No, I did'nt buy them. I dug them from Old office park that was being demolitioned for a new home depot. They were going to bull doze everthing on site, but I was dating the excavator at the time, so I got anything off the site I wanted, lol..even with help, that was a VERY tiring few days, lol...

That is where all my crepe myrtles, & few red oak & live oaks came from, too, lol...

Every couple of years, I divide it and plant it other places. I'm getting ready to do it, again, for my curbside garden in the works...

I'd be interested in what Garrison's pricing would be...Have you considered other places, too?

It's the "Evergreen Giant" liriope that they have that I was thinking of. I just looked it up again. Oops... It's the stuff that gets over 2 feet tall and they have it in all the designs on their website.

Dating the excavator.... :) What does your husband say about those plants being in the yard? A reminder of your previous love? ;-)

Dan Garrison quoted me about $150 to $200 to come out and then draw me up a plan. I do want someone experienced and knowlegeable about newer plants. I think because they have the nursery, the combined experience of David and Dan, they would be a good choice. There is one other landscaper I was thinking of using. He works with Trinity Tree Farms in McKinney and he charges $100 an hour. His plans on their website look really nice too.

LOl...Trinity is exactly who I had in mind!

They are much closer to you, too. I'm sure either would do a nice job.

2 ft. tall??!! I've not heard of THAT one...need to look that up, Sounds interesting!

Dan Garrison said he lives in McKinney so the distance would not be a problem. He said he'd just come by early evening, which is perfect for me. It'll probably be another month or so until we have someone out since planting will be done in late September at the very earliest. I still need to call the landscaper at Trinity and have a phone conversation with him, before deciding. I have only spoken with the owner of Trinity (the tree guy) about the landscaper.
