blooms dies before they open

Homosassa, FL(Zone 9a)

oh me i don,t know whats wrong but on my patricia the blooms drys up before they ever open,it has 3 blooms and there all drying up like paper.
if any one has a reason please let me know, thanks

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Sorry Eunice Patricia is so pretty !
Most like the reason is stress, high temperatures for long period of times 80 degrees, causes flowers to be small or not open at all. Different Varieties with double, frilled, or green flowers often have this trait.
Do you have you A/C on ? What's the temp. in your home ? In the winter/spring all my plants bloom in summer not as many even with my A/C on fans, and we run lights at night.

I looked at Dr. Optimara they say reason can be ;
Buds Not Opening: Possible Causes

Below is the complete list of problems which may cause this symptom.

Cyclamen Mites
Fertilizer - Calcium Deficiency
Humidity - Not Enough
Potting Soil - pH Imbalance
Water - Not Enough
http://www.optimara.com/doctoroptimara/20100-20212/20101.html
Books I read and Violet Barn also say stress, high temps. 80 degrees plus.

thank you far thoese links ,will read all. well my a/c is set at 78 and i have my ceiling fan on medium, maybe with my curtains open its to much on them ,so i closed curtains, will take violet out and clean it up and check far bugs.

oh Gosh, hubby had bought more schultz professional potting soil plus, thought it was the same as rest of them ,but this has slow release multi cote plant food number on it is 08-14-09 thats the streanth of the food.
guess that might be whats wrong

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Did you add perlite to the mix to make it nice and light ? If you added no other food this 08-14-09 would be fine. If adding ood might have got an over load.
Or it might be one of those Varieties with thses traits ?
Where did you buy it and how long have you had it. Is this the nly plant doing this ? It may be in it's traits.
I know a lot ofmy pnk/semi-double ad ble buds take a long tie to open. Thy will even look dried up like they are not going to open but their fine and soon to open.
South ore Rose does this takes forever for her beautiful flowrs to open. And many of my other pinks and greens bu when they finaly pen thy are worth the wait !

I think some of my plants were on overload so I leached them yesterday. Will give them one more watering of plain water and then will start fertilizing w/ dilute sol. I was alternating this brand w/ that one and then stopped doing that and started using Optimara and once I stopped using every brand i could find the plants started looking a bit better. Don't know if that makes any difference or was just my observations/guess.

Violet_Treasure
i think maybe it was a overload on fertilize, because i have been useing vf-11 on them, and i just notice the different in the potting soil.i thought it would open but when it keeled over i cut it off it was dryed up. i have had it far a about 2 months now ,when i got it it was full of blooms and flowers
do i need to do like aprilwillis leach them. what about the others that i repotted with that soil,
yes i put perlite in it like you said
aprilwillis
i only use vf-11 since i got it

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

That is good either leach or re-pot. If soil mix has food don't use VF-11 or any other food until you feel food in soil has run out. And again it might just be this one Varietie Rob from Violet Barn says this also.

think i will just repot them, thanks

Allison, think it was you or someone who noted that MG peralite even has MG in it- was mixing some potting mix yesterday and noticed that I'd purchased that brand and sure enough it has MG in it! Poo! Will have to make more informed purchase next time and perhaps drive out of the way since this is what HD 5 minutes from my house carries.Think mine at least were being over fertilized w/ what was in the mix and what I was adding!

April, it was me who noticed that about the perlite. I wonder if, in the situation of that being all the perlite that can be found or obtained, it could be well-rinsed to flush some or all of the fertilizer from it before mixing it in with soil?

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

That may help Amy. Yes they just started adding food ? Why when their soil has food ?
At HD and Lowes you can buy the large brown paper bags of Perlite their about 3-4 ft tall and cost about $9.00-$10.00 and last a long time. This has no food.
If there is food just don't feed your AV's for awhile That's what I do I have save money and plants doing well though I just started with the Bayer may 1 st.
Also I read a few books/articles if using soil with food feed you plant the first 30 days as it takes a while for food in soil to get working in the soil. Plus the more you water and if it comes out bottom faster the food will be lost.

But MG has urea in it, so does the urea in the fertilizer in the soil and perlite not burn the roots of the AVs? Or is it in such a small concentration that it doesn't cause a problem? I've just stuck with MG potting soil, because all the potting soils I can find have fertilizer in them and I feel more comfortable with the MG name than any of the others.

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

Allison it's all because of their name!

I think most folks use it as part of soil mix so it really isn't necessary. I will be looking for the no name brand of peralite in the future.
Agree more watering/pre use rinsing will flush some and that may be a good idea although I am almost out of mine.

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

Amy I think it's in an amount that in the long run isn't good for AVs- I do know that I have read many folks are not using MG soil for starting cuttings and seeds of other non-AV plants because the MG food is too concentrated for tender babies and kills more than it helps- I think that's probably why some folks buy "seed starting" mixes, mix there own or buy other brands, but I noticed that MG is not the only one doing this. If you use MG or any brand w/ fert in it for repotting mature plants it is probably a benefit but in the case of AVs I believe it's too much, too harsh.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Well I have been using it and in May 1 st using Bayer Advance been trans-planting all plants into it, putting down leaves, babies...I use NO other food have not had any for maybe 3 months now.
And I am not having knock on wood not problems.
I have only seen good changes.
But if you go and try to feed on top of this you will have a problem.
