I have some still green clumps of daffodils that I want to move. Can I do it now if I lift the clumps with a lot of dirt and transplant to a new spot? If so do I water or withold? If I can't move the clumps now can I wait until the leaves yellow and then lift the bulbs and store until the fall? If so, please give me advise about storage. Thanks, Patti
moving daffodils
Hey Patti,
I dug up my clumps about 3 weeks ago, put them into sand and into the dark cool cellar. I have never done this before but had to get them out because they were overgrown and I wanted the space. I look forward to hearing from an expert! I left the foliage on and it is slowly yellowing. I am hoping they will just go dormant and be OK to replant come fall, as there are hundreds of them.

Patti, daffs should in theory have about 6 weeks for the bulb to build before lifting, but it can be done before, they might take a year or two to settle again. If you leave them somewhere to die back if the foliage is still green, then they can be stored dry until September and then planted. You can plant here up until early November. I have done it and just left them in a box in the shed, a bit of heat doesn't bother them. If mice can get to your storage area they may eat them, I know they eat tulips if they can get to them.
When they are dormant they will be OK, and start to grow in the autumn when it gets cooler and they get some moisture from the air even if not planted. You may have a lot more heat than us, just keep dry and under cover, I don't think they want to be shrivelled.
Most spring flowering bulbs do prefer a drier summer period so if you were to move them with plenty of soil I don't think that would harm them, but if you were to have a lot of rain and the roots had been disturbed and hadn't got a hold they might rot before the bulb has had a chance to dry and ripen properly
Someone else may be able to tell you more.
