Backing up my info in Windows XP Pro

Background: 1) Never did a back-up --- EVER; 2) I only use my computer for email and the internet --- my computer knowledge/understanding is just 1 or 2 notches above "computer idiot". Problem: I am trying to back up my files because I suspect my hard drive is on its last legs --- computer has slowed down noticeably and a couple of times a week the usual hard drive whirring noise changes loudly and dramatically for 5-10 seconds. My many attempts to back up have been frustratingly unsuccessful. Trying to use the "backup" function supplied with Windows is way over my head. I am confused by the backup info/instructions in my "Dummies" Windows XP Pro books. HELP!!!!!
