so new I don't know what to ask :o)

Ocean Springs, MS(Zone 8b)

Hi,
New to DG, trying to cultivate a green thumb here on the coast in MS. I've checked out a lot of the forums so far and it all looks so neat. I didn't see anything in particular for beginners, but I could have easily missed something. Any particular forums I should keep my eye on? I'm really just starting -- I love plants, keep buying them and have success with some, and sad partings to others. There's just so much to know! Right now it's kind of trial and error, but fun all the while.

Welcome aboard Bernadette,

We all have to start somewhere and yes we all have lost plants.
There isn't anything particular for beginners, I would choose the area or plants that you have questions about and post a thread in that forum.

I just joined today. It all is quite overwhelming. I am hoping to go to bed soon and get off this website!!!!!!!!

Hi there, DG is wonderful for beginners, Al is right, just jump on a forum that sounds interesting. I'll warn you, though, they're a bunch of enablers...if you like a particular type of plant...say, tomatoes...soon you'll be well on the path to addiction, with help from everyone here... :)

Bernadette, I spent a summer in Ocean Springs a few years ago at the Gulf Coast Research Lab...it was a bit of a mess after Katrina, I heard...hope you did not sustain any serious damage!

Welcome Bernadette! There's so much to read and learn here on Dave's Garden. I'd have to say that I was quite overwhelmed at first and I easily fell to information overload just trying to navigate this wealth of gardening info. Here's a few pointers:
If you don't know, ASK.
Being a newbie in all aspects of gardening, I really felt that some of my questions probably had answers that most people learned in third grade. Anyhoo, as I kept reading, I was relieved to find braver newbies asking some of those elementary questions I was afraid to ask! What a relief to find so much comfort in the gentle patience of so many gardeners willing to go in any detail necessary to help us newbies, regardless if he/she be a novice gardener or just new to surfing Dave's Garden.
Find the forums that you like best and choose them as favorites.
When looking for interesting topics within the forums, read the newest posts first. Most of the questions I was looking for have been asked and answered dozens of times. I found that it wasn't neccessary to go back several previous pages unless I really had a lot of extra computer free-time. (My hubby's a puter-hog)
Use Dave's Gardening tools
Trade tracker is an excellent organizational tool and memory sparker! Immediately used after committing to a trade or SASE it has saved me from brain freeze, especially when I failed to add the post to my watch list. Good for listing on-line purchases with nurseries too!
Let your computer work for you.
Use your bookmark feature and make a special bookmark file just for gardening links. You'll be surprised how much information can be shared....and then forget in which forum you last read it. Use it to mark links that are of special interest to you; i.e. wintersown.org. Of course, "your info" on DG lets you see the posts you've made and those that you've marked as being on your watchlist. Also, I have found that using my history feature allows me the ability to back track to a link that I didn't think I'd want to bookmark. Especially useful when you've visited sooooo many vendors from Watchdog and then a few days later you can't remember the name of "that" great nursery which offered "that" special price on "that" to-die-for-daylily you swore you wouldn't buy last Monday.
I know I'm long-winded here, but hey!!! it's 4:06 a.m. and I've finally got some computer time to myself!

Happy Gardening!

Well, Bernadette, I just noticed Donna bumped your welcome post. You've been here longer than me! Got any pointers for me? I'm still in the third grade! LOL
