Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Wow, some of you all sure do live in hyper-drive :-) People have occationally accused me of such, but I don't think they've met any of you all! Me, I'm the sit in the sun, sip ice tea and putter with the plants and animals kind of person. Probably why I know I would never be good at anything like "real" farming - it's way more commitment than I can make.

The Peach Lives! This was a bare root transplant that arrived in fine condition from Starkes Bros, but had a tough time adjusting to the wind and a cold then hot spell back to back. The buds swelled and then shriveled about a month ago. But since it is between the two healthy apple trees, I figured, for the cost of a little water and a bit of mulch, I would just pretend that it was going to live, and continue to minister to it when I watered the apple trees. And low and behold, 3 buds swelled last week and have grown into little tiny bunches of leaves.

On the other hand, two herritage red raspberries that were previously doing ok, now look dead. Something chewed them down to the ground. One survived and is sending up little green canes again. Considering that all 3 had been pulled out of the ground at least once by the dogs at some point in their brief stay here, I suppose I shall be thrilled that one still appears to be alive. Encouraged by my Peach's drive to survive and raspberry tenacity in general, I will continue to water/feed the two that appear to have been eaten down to a stump. Rabbits?

Horse something season is in full swing around here. Although we are not "horsey" people, several of the neighbors are, and there is an area near the post office where congregations of riders can be seen on many weekends. Looks like fun but lots of hard work, too. Good luck with this year's endurance riding, MaryE.

Win some, loose some, but I can see that over the years, there will be trees taller than me to shade and protect us from wind and sand. And every time something survives here, it's like a small miracle. It sure is good to be living where one can be a part of it all.

Am currently researching ferret care as DS wants one (they ARE cute), but somehow, I haven't been able to reconsile ferret (weasle family) and chickens. Seems like one would be wanting to hunt the other... strong fences will keep the dogs (hopefully) out of the hen house, but ferrets, from what I've read, are quite the escape artist (related to goats, perhaps?!).

Anyway, you all take care, and many blessings to you. -Karla
