What do we do with Freesa bulbs after theyre done blooming..

Mesilla Park, NM

Are they like the daffs, we wait till the foliage dies down? Mine are all in pots here with other plants. I didn't know if they only bloomed once and that was it or what, this is the first year for me with them.

Thanks for any info you can give.

gcfq,

I tired them here too, as a former CA resident I became very fond of them. Fressia do not like FL, mine bloomed for about 5 days. In CA they bloom for 5 weeks. Mine had no scent. They will rot in our summer weather so they have to be potted up and kept dry during the summer. If you try to store them in a bag, on a shelf, in a pot they will dry out completely and die. The best thing is to buy a pot of them from the florist, enjoy them and toss em. The florist kinds are grown in a cool greenhouse and they use artifical lights to time the blooms.

I tried many of the S.African bulbs here, the winter growing kind. I bought sparaxis, tritonia, watsonia, dutch iris, etc. None did well, our nights are too warm for the flowers. I have been experimenting with the summer growing bulbs from S Africa with much better results (crinum). There are parts of SA that have warm temps and summer rain. I have bought bulbs and seed from www.capeseedandblub.com and they are very helpful. good luck

Antoinette,

Mine bloom every spring. You have to let the foliage completely die down before trying to remove, otherwise you pull the bulbs up with it. I planted the bulbs in my bed about 5 years ago and they are multiplying like crazy. Every spring, I have a fabulous show of color and scent.
