Whitefly battle already! The best solution?

Olathe, KS(Zone 6a)

Hello friends!
I wintered some of my tropical hibiscus in the local Highschool's greenhouse and I just brought them home Wednesday. As soon as I got them home, I found a MASSIVE whitefly infestation that has now spread onto most of my hardy hibiscus too. I'm sickened over the whole thing and my wife is about to strangle me so I have to figure out the best solution ASAP.
I HATE using chemicals but I will if I have too. I have a bottle of an Ortho "Systemic Insect Killer" aka "Isotox". I'm going to use it this weekend unless I can find another solution quick.

What do you all think would be my best bet for winning this battle? I need some advice inna hurry.

I figure this forum would be my best bet for finding my solution. You all are so knowledgable and have been very helpful in the past.
Thanks to you all;)

This is an old wives tale but it worked for me. My Confederate Rose was covered with whiteflies and I was advised to spread a heavy layer of worm castings underneath the plant. It seems the flies do not like the odor of the worm poop nor do they like the taste after the plant has taken up some of the nutrients from it. It may be coincidental but I never had another whitefly after treating the plant this way and Confederate Roses are normally whitefly magnets.
Good luck.

I found this "recipe" in a DG thread about whitefly. The person who posted it works in a tropical plant nursery, and this is what they use. I found my Confederate rose was infested (and I have hibiscus nearby), so I tried it; and it worked. After one application, there were hardly any insects remaining, and I sprayed again. I'll see if it needs a third application tomorrow. Now I have sooty mold on a few leaves because of the whitefly infestation, so I'd like to find an organic treatment for that.

In a 1 gal. jug add:
1 cup Murphy's Oil Soap
2 Tbsp. dishwashing liquid (I used Palmolive.)
1/2 cup alcohol
Finish filling jug with water.

Ardesia, I think I'll try the worm castings, too, once the infestation is totally gone. I think the spray may be the quick fix, and the worm castings might be long term. Let's hope so!

I would spray a minimum of 3 times at 7 to 10 day intervals. By spreading out the applications like this, you interupt the life/breeding cycle as most sprays can't kill the eggs. White flies have a very similar cycle to the dreaded spider mites(I've found a few mites too) and you HAVE to space out the applications as I've described to be effective as possible.
I HATE using chemicals and I've began the past 5-6 seasons with a beneficial insect "Variety Pack" from Planet Natural (www.PlanetNatural.com). I dropped the ball this year and forgot to place my order in time darnit. I'll never forget again in the future....I hope.
I too am seeing some signs of molds or mildews around the yard. We had a very unusual August last summer with a lot of rain and very cool temps, that set the stage for major mold problems. Then we had a very mild winter so I knew mold was going to be a problem this summer. I used an Ortho product that "controls 130 different disease's" found in gardens and they recomend applying it long before ever seeing any signs of mold/mildew. It recomended applying it as soon as plants started growing so I did and I'm so glad I did. EVERY summer my weeping mulberry would get a rusty like leaf spot and I was told it was a kind of mold. By mid to late summer, every leaf on the tree would be showing signs of damage. This is the first year I haven't seen any kind of problems with that particular tree so "Ortho Disease Control" is really disease controlling(knock on wood).
Today is the day for my second application of the Ortho Systemic Pesticide and I'm going to do it even though I'm not seeing many flies, I'm going to follow the directions to the T. I'm curious what other sad suprises the pests may have in store for our gardens this year. I'm sure some other oddball problem will follow this very wierd and early white fly infestation, I'd sure like to be proven wrong on this 1!
Goodluck;)

Thanks, JD. The friend who gave me the confederate rose cutting said she'd totally eliminated the white fly problem from her cr, which is very large and healthy. She's giving me some of what she used; I'll post it here when I get it.
