Oh that is a beauty!! Yes what is a rain lily???Lauri

Until several years ago I had no idea what a rainlily was either- I thought it was just me, but clearly it's not. Ok a rain lily is a bulb, it multiplies quickly as a bulb but also puts out seed and the seed produces the plants quickly but I understand it takes a long time from seed to bloom. The plant, above ground, w/o flower looks like monkey grass, liriope- that sort of thing. Some varieties have thin leaves, other a bit thicker and one variety gets pretty large- the leaves aren't as tight or uniform as liriope, it's a bit less formal. Anyway after it rains (hence the name) the plant sends up flowers, many, many- some folks plant a few among their liriope borders- I have one that has huge flowers but it doesn't flower as often. I have them in pale pink, white, bright pink, yellow, orange, cream and apricot. Will see what's bloomed this morning and post. Oh yeah, they do not bloom w/o a trigger- rain or being tricked into thinking it's rained- a good rain, like we had last week, always produces the most flowers- I guess you can't improve on mother nature.

When I put Rain Lilies in plant search in Plant files it came up with Trailing Oxilias ) SP_ which I would not mind having I have the non-trailing Purple leaf one growing in our gardens they have little blubls too.

Allison I still think it's a different plant
These are in the amaryllis family, Zephyranthes & Habranthus- and what you are refering to is in the Oxalidaceae family, Oxallis.

I have also seen these referred to as fairly lilies.

This is a photo of my yellow- many more unopened blosoms.

In this photo you can see there are 2 different cultivars and one is much bigger, paler than the others.

This shot isn't the best but trying to show the bed on the right side of my house, it has more rain lilies than the other side and many are open today, still w/ more to come.

Here is nice photo of the apricot ones, more opened this morning.

Allison I have seen some really lovely Oxallis but just can't bring myself to plant them...seems wrong to plant things that are related to the things that I am constantly cursing in my front yard!!!! LOL.

I had pots of them in our home for awhile they bloomed year round and everone loved them . I;d like to get some yellow flowering Oxallis~

Allison seems like I saw them somewhere. If I remember I will let you know- I am sure it was on line. My daughter has some- not yellow- and they look great and they don't spread like the ones in my front yard.
