Why is my corn tasseling at 2 ft high?

Henderson, NV(Zone 8b)

My corn is between 2 and 3 ft high, starting to grow a "tassel" in the center. This is my first time planting corn and I planted about a 4 ft block (I don't have a lot of space)...Temps here are triple digits but I keep it mulched with straw and watered well. It looks healthy enough but I thought it should 6 ft or so before it "did" anything.

Early varieties may begin to show a tassel at 2½ to 3 feet...especially when stressed a little. Likely your corn will grow a couple feet more yet.
Sweet corn always grows taller after first showing the tassel tip.

You did not specify what variety you are raising...helpful to know as different varieties grow to different heights.

Thanks for the input, I think I saved the package. Will let you know what kind.

Some of mine are doing the same thing. Variety is Peaches N Cream.

Anything I need to worry about?

Nope; Peaches and and Cream is a great old hybrid, but it is not a tall corn. Most everything I am growing this year (exception Silver Queen) is tasseling at two to 3 ft. That is a little less than normal, but the weather has really been strange this spring. Lawns have not grown very much.

Farmerdill, in the plantfiles Peaches & cream is said to have a height of 6-8'. Is that not normal for that variety? If not, what height should I expect? Thanks.

I had gone to a farm store around here intending to get one of the varieties that had been suggested to me last fall and the only one they had that I could remember being recommended was silver queen. The store people suggested peaches and cream.

Farmerdill, are you still in drought there? I thought most of GA had made up its deficit.

Texaswscimo. There are two cultivars sold as Peaches and Cream. One is a second early, the other a main season. The early version is shorter, but never had either one reach 6 ft, even Silver Queen tops out at a little over 6 ft. With lots of nitrogen and water, you can get more stalk, but I don't eat stalk.

L. Tilton we are holding steady for 2009 to this point. Have not not made up for last years or 2007 deficits, so ground water levels are still low. Looks promising for this years crops at present.

It's sure your turn for better weather!
