L'heure Bleu

Silver Spring, MD

These are the first blooms. I bought this plant not knowing what the bloom would look like. I liked the name. I lived in France for two years from 1963--1965. I thought the name of the plant would be a gentil reminder of the time I spent there. Little did I know that I would fall in love with the blooms. Very delicate shade of blue and I love the serrated leaves.

I think Jesse was asking about leaves being shinny. I haven't done anything to these leaves except brush the soil from them when I repotted her. This plant looks healthy. It looked healthy when I bought her. Now, I am trying to figure out how to keep her healthy and keep the leaves shinning naturally.

How are your flowers doing, Jill? The ones I got this year from VG are absolutely beautiful.

Beautiful blue flower and plant ! I don't know Nanna you may say your having problems but all your plants are so beautiful and healthy !
I read I think from Rob's VB ?? That some AV varieties have a natural shine , then some never shine , and then shine can also be from a healthy plant. But some varieties of Av's will never have the type of foliage that shines.

Allison, you are kind. I guess I just worry to much. But maybe that is a good thing. My plants will bloom two or three time and look very beautiful but then the centers grow small and sometimes the leaves get small and the plants stop growing. Or at least stop growing the way I think they should grow. I would really like my plants to be constant. In otherswards perfect! (I hope you can hear me laughing) I get so much enjoyment out of them. BUT I actually do think I have been using too much fertilizer.

Anyhow, thanks for your comments. I wish I knew as much as you do!

Yes it sure could be too much fertilizer and will never hurt to use less.
Also you may want to check the Ph of your water and the water Ph with fertilizer in it.
Sometimes I think plants will bloom big time for months and months non stop and when they do stop the foliage looks tight, maybe the centers are small could not get enough life or food the flowers took it all.
I have never know a grower take a show plant home ~
I'm sure our plants get tired they are always putting on a show.
You could also call or ask Rob he is always happy to help !

You have great insight, Allison. I never thought of that. I always assumed the reason show plants weren't taken home was because of possible bugs. Do you remember Ma's Debutante. Oh what a beautiful plant. Well, her center went small and I couldn't fix it. I guess I was impatient. I finally cut out the center and tried to root it but it didn't work. There are now about 6 suckers in the center of the plant. Hopefully I can grow another one as lovely as the first.

It sounds very right that if a plant blooms and blooms that the center would be depleated of nuitrients.

Thanks. Once again you knew just the right thing to say.

Oh very pretty! I would fall in love too.
