I was so surprised! I've been watching momma sitting ever so patiently and me wondering how long before the eggs actually hatch. I went to walk out tonight, always looking up at the light fixture first before I go out. She was standing on the edge of the nest. She flew away, so I took the cue and walked out, looking up at the nest the whole time. I saw a beak! A baby robin beak! I had to snap a photo when I got back, and here it is..........
I've got baby robins!
Cute!! Has the other egg hatched yet?
No! I just took the photo less than an hour ago. I'm going to keep my eye on it though. Momma doesn't like it much, I need a ladder to see!
Let us know when it hatches.
Aww, memories of childhood flashing by me right now.
Remember the first time you found a Robin's nest and stood there silent looking at the beautiful blue eggs? Gosh I do. Awesome.
If only the nest was within my distance of seeing it without the ladder! Momma doesn't like me climbing on a ladder taking pictures of her babies! That's for sure. She was sure cussing me out and calling for all available robins to come help her!
I wonder if the last egg will hatch? It still looks so perfect...
Check it out tomorrow. If it hasn't hatched then, it might not. But then who knows?
Those other babies look so big to have come out of eggs that small!
That's what I thought BackyardZoo! I saw the beak sticking up and knew they'd just hatched sometime yesterday morning. I ran my errand, got back and grabbed the ladder and camera....and good grief! How did those birds get so big!
Momma is sure busy feeding them. We stood outside today talking with a contractor and she didn't seem to mind us at all. Just kept finding worms, flying back to the nest feeding, finding another one.....she's going to be busy!
So far, the other egg is unhatched. My husband checked it around noon today. We'll keep watching it.
Has the other egg hatched yet?
No. It's still just a perfect little blue egg in there.
Take some pics over days of the babies if you can, they're so cute!
Oh Marilyn, I did. I thought I had the camera set with the right settings...only to come inside and download them and find them all nothing but a big blurry mess. They grow so fast, it wasn't long after the pic above that they all flew away. Momma and at least 1 baby came back for one night. The next morning I saw the baby in the nest. As soon as I snapped a couple pics, s/he was gone!
If I don't figure out this camera thing, I'm doomed to forever take blurry and just plain bad pics. I got a new camera, but so far, about 2 out of 10 come out right.
terry, I've been watching your thread and watching my own robin's nest at the same time. I didn't get any pics early on because I didn't want to disturb them. They were in a juniper at the corner of the house and the momma got so upset any time anybody got near. That's the only reason I knew the nest was there. There were 4 eggs. I never even looked when the babies were little. I figured they were ok because momma was going in and out with food. I looked in on them one day when I knew she was out and they were so big they barely fit. they didn't even flinch...just froze. Well, 2 days later when I peeked in they got startled and all 4 of them jumped out of the nest. Both the momma and daddy came in screaming at me. I felt so bad. By the next morning they had moved to the back of the house under some other junipers by my pool. They could fly a few feet. Momma was still mad at me and moved them back to the front again the next day. I haven't seen them in a couple of days, but they may have fledged by now. gram
I think my momma robin knew that this was going to be a somewhat high traffic area. It's the door we always use. I was careful though, to not scare her away if I could help it. I only took pics when she was gone. If it was lower, I could have watched it a lot better...but it was on top of the light fixture and the only way for me to see it was with a ladder. I was coming up the sidewalk (near the end of their stay) and suddenly momma flew away. Next thing I knew baby flew out too! Landed right in front of me. So I start talking to it....I'm not going to hurt you, go ahead, go on with your momma......I am such a weirdo. :o) Momma didn't squawk at me at all. Here I was thinking maybe she'd start dive bombing me! And I ever only saw the one. I know 2 eggs hatched, but I only saw one baby when they got bigger.
All babies are gone now. Do I take the nest down? Somebody told me to leave it, that she'd use it again?
The problem that I have with bird nests, on light fixtures, right by the door, is that after few nest cycles there is bird doo running down the wall right next to the door.
I removed the nest and any other nest stars there because of the mess. The robins then moved their nest down a few feet and built one on top of a large grape vine wreath that I had hanging on the side of the house.... which I decided I could live with it there. We compromised.
joe, now you sound like my dad! Unfortunately, this 110 yr old house has that wunnerful Peoria Siding AND Windows. Very easy to hose off and a little elbow grease from me. Oh, I forgot, you said on another thread you were lazy.....:o)
these babies made a nice mess on my fence. and I think they spent one night on my back steps, because I had to hose that down, too. serves me right for scaring them :-)
I had 3 babies born June 22nd, we have been checking them every day and they have progressed great, well I just went out to see that 2 are gone and 1 died and is in the next. I have not seen them around. Can they fly already, should I move the dead one out so momma and babies come back?
Here is a pick of them 2 days old
