Best way to get rid of spidermites?

Turlock, CA(Zone 9a)

They hit fast and hard this year, I just noticed it today. I washed my 5 foot tall 'Golden' [planted in a whiskey barrel] down real well. I used the Bayer systemic a few weeks ago, but it didn't help ward of these little nasties! Is neem oil safe for brugs? Anything else you have tried that works well? Thanks, Kim

Pyola from Gardens Alive works for me. It's an organic pesticide with vegetable oil in it. I always keep a spray bottle handy and only spray on demand. Make sure you spray under the leaves as well. I use it primarily in my greenhouse because it is the only pesticide that will not interact negatively with the polycarbonate walls. Outside I use Orthenex insecticide/fungicide. I have yet to find a plant that didn't like it so I use it on everything.

Thanks so much Xeramtheum! I just bought Pyola from Gardens Alive, but haven't used it yet, but will now!

When you mix it up in a spray bottle, just remember to shake it from time to time to mix the oil. Mix up 2 teaspoons to a quart for the spray bottle.

Does Payola work with one spraying, X? Or do you need to repeat it?

I wish we had something to work prophylactically against mites. They just sneak up and get you every time.

It seems to work with one spraying if you get top & bottom and get good coverage. Just make sure your spray bottle is on fine mist and make sure you shake it .. I think the vegetable oil in it is what does the trick, it sticks to those critters like glue and smothers the eggs.
