Which End is Up?

I am unsure where to post this question? I also posted this on the "Identification" forum. Maybe someone here can advise me?

I was given three Glory Lily Rothschild bulbs, and I have NO IDEA which end is up on these bulbs? I have read that I should plant them around 3 inches deep in the soil but which part down and which end up? Obviously I can tell which way to plant the top one in the pic as it already has some activity, but what about the other two? Can anyone help me with this?

One can ascertain when gloriosa's are ready to grow by observing the end of the tubers which will take on a pinkish/reddish tint. If you look closely you can often make out the beginning growth tip, Close examination of this feature can tell you which side of the tuber goes up, One part of this end feature kind of points up while the other end of the rudimentary growth feature is roundish, The tip pointing up indicates that is the way to align the tuber. It's recommended the tuber be placed horizontially 2 to 3 inches under the growing medium.
By season's end an interesting observation (at least when grown in large containers) can be noted in that the tubers often have migrated to a vertical position.

jmorth, thank you. As you can see from the picture, the top tuber was clearly ready to plant. Should I wait to plant the other two tubers until I see some sign of a beginning growth tip? Or should I go ahead and place them into the soil? Thanks again!

Plant em!!! I have lots and lots of Gloriosas, since they propagate like rabbits here. I always plant mine on their sides. Three inches sounds good. They will naturally migrate to whatever depth they want. Sometimes I would swear they were alive. I have dug up gloriosa that I knew should be at three or four inches and found them to be at eight or nine inches.

I'd agree with Rylaff as many if not most bulb's shoots will find their way to the surface. Most of mine in containers are already up and going with flowers about to open
