The plant shown in this photo is truly Philodendron stenolobum. The true Philodendron williamsii is extremely rare both in nature and in collections. A total of one person in Miami I am aware of has the true Philodendron williamsii.

For many years plant sellers have sold the plant in this photo as Philodendron williamsii but that is simply a horticultural error. There is little scientific information on the net (it can be found) explaining the differences in these species. The true Philodendron williamsii has a more ovate leaf blade that is not elongated as in this photo of Philodendron stenolobum. My information came directly from aroid botanists Dr. Eduardo Goncaleves in Brazila and Dr. Tom Croat of the Missouri Botanical Garden. Dr. Croat confirmed the identify of Philodendron stenolobum for me.

This picture was taken at Longwood Gardens in Philadelphia. The plant has a marker on it with the name Philodendron 'Espirito Santo'. Sometimes cultivars are a bit different from the species. Maybe you should notify Longwood Gardens.

I agree... not P williamsii

It appears that Espirito Santo isn't a cultivar, but rather the place in Brazil that P. spiritus-sancti derives it's name from? http://www.ubcbotanicalgarden.org/forums/showthread.php?p=136742 Is it possible that the plant in the photo is P. spiritus-sancti?

Unfortunately, if we can't find a correct identity, this entry will need to be removed for lack of verification.

It is very typical of Philodendron stenolobum... you don't have to remove it, just move it. It is likely Philodendon spiritis-sancti is also really P stenolobum

Thanks! The photo has been moved.

I realize this thread is getting old but I thought I'd post a photo of Philodendron spiritus-sancti. It is very distinctive and VERY expensive. There are only six known specimens in the wild and the plant in the photo above is quite common. This one is owned by the International Aroid Society and we take cuttings of it on an annual basis to be sold at auction.
