I have a plant growing on my plant

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

I have what appears to be a plant growing on the side of my plant. Do I just cut it off and put in the soil? Will it grow like that?

Jesse Hun it's a sucker. You know about suckers . It's easy to take off and potted it. It may be another plant with roots in this case take it out of the pot and separate and pot each in own pot. If it is a Sucker you use a sharp point and take it off and pot it up. I thought I gave you links and pictures of all this in another thread ?

congrats! that's a very nice little sucker that will turn into a new plant in no time flat.

There are links on the sticky, I'm sure, but here's Rob's page on propagating AVs from suckers, http://www.robsviolet.com/chimera_violets.htm

I generally don't actually cut suckers off the plant, I wiggle my fingers down to the base of the sucker and gently pop it off the main stem. Some people pop little suckers off with the tip of a pencil.

And here is real good pictures and info on Rooting and Starting Suckers

And I bumped a tread you did a nice plant from one to two the other day !

Thanks guys. I thought that was what I had. I just have never seen one make a complete separate plant like that. I guess most people would have split them up by now but I'm still learning.

Sometimes I've also had a separate second plant in a pot, probably because a tiny plantlet got potted up with a larger one and wasn't noticed until it grew larger. In this case, or sometimes when the sucker is attached right at the base of the plant, you can manage to get a little sucker/plantlet removed with a few roots attached to it, making it all the easier to pot up on its own.

I actually found two suckers on it so now I have 3 plants. I will take photos tomorrow. I worked on my plants for 12 straight hrs today. I'm sort of sick of them right now. LOL

That's super Jesse ! Just like the plant you did the other day ! When I have a whole other plant growing I separate with roots, when I have a sucker it's different. Many times like Jill said when you pot a baby another baby is in the growing . I like to when babies are real tiny I keep them together when separating from Mom like two together and trans-plant when they are larger and they do real well for me like this !

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I experimented this winter with putting 2 or 3 tiny babies into one little thumbprint pot, and they did better that way than singly, but I was putting them into opposite sides of the pot (to give them more room for symmetrical growth), and I think they might have done better if I had left them stuck tightly together. I don't deliberately separate babies this small, but sometimes you can start potting up huge plantlets from a crowded pot where the mom leaf has died off, and then you find a few tiny plantlets tucked among the larger ones.... somehow, I can't just toss out the tiny ones, so they get potted up too, with variable success.

Most times mine get pretty large before I take from Mom. But there is always little ones in there they either stay with Mom in new pot/soil or they stay together. I have read some vendors do this also.
Works good for me !

Some of mine are so tiny too. I need to get some smaller pots than what I have now. The smallest pots that I have are 2.5 so I need to order some smaller ones. I love the azalea pots because they are not as deep. Anyone know a good place to buy them?

I buy the 2 inch little white ones for minis and babies are perfect . I think their about 7 cents each.
This other place has the 2.25 and 2.50 but the pots are like 21 cents each with a small discount if you buy a lot.
The 2 inch pots I get from Secret Gardens link in sticky .

I need to order some pots from Secret Gardens. Maybe they have little 1 inch pots too? I got some 1 oz plastic cups that I've been using for small plantlets and minis (with a hole poked in the bottom), and I really love them, but I've been unable to find more around here (these came from a restaurant supply place in NC). I've also been using 3 oz and 5 oz plastic cups. The thing I really like about the plastic cups is that they are translucent, so you can get a better idea of how moist the potting mix is and of how well the roots are filling the pot. I'm not just being frugal in buying them, LOL, although they are very reasonably priced!

I use their tiny little thumb print pots. They have small holes on side for wicking or bottom watering

Critter,

Do you remember the name of the restaurant supply store?
