Blue Boy has bloomed

Silver Spring, MD

The blossoms are small as I knew they would be. The color is very luscious. But, look at the leaves. I think the leaves are spectacular!!!

Your's is beautiful ! Your flower looks like it has stripes !
I got mine in April from VG but it's no way as pretty as your's. I washed it and Sprayed it with neem oil but it still has a dull look foliage :((. I am going to put leaves down to get a new plant.
Your's is beautiful !

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

What a gorgeous plant!

Silver Spring, MD

I really love this one. It was grown with a high phosphorous fertilizer. I don't know if that makes a difference. VG changed there fertilizer and the owner said she likes it better. I bought some. Some of my plants like it and some don't. I also lowered the lights on the stand. I only have two burning on each shelf instead of four.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Well I bought mine from Violet Gallery to and just got it in April . But you girls got to get the best plants in person ! Mine is in natural light in isolation still.
And much smaller.

Wow!Allison is right the leaves are great!

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

Wow! That is gorgeous plant!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Yeah... figures they'd change their recommended fertilizer after I bought a container from them last fall that I think will last me several years yet! LOL

What's the N-P-K ratio on the new fertilizer?

Silver Spring, MD

Glad everyone likes Blue Boy. I will be setting leaves soon and will share will whoever wants. The fertilizer is called Nutriculture 12-31-14. It is very concentrated. you use only 1/4 tsp per gallon. So I use half of that because I wick. I don't think I will use it all the time though. I have had very good luck with Optimara which is balanced. The however is a good start to get things moving in the Spring and to help young and mini plants get going.

Allison, I forgot to answer your question about the strips. There are none. It must be the lighting and my lack of photo skills.

He is the most gorgeous solid color of Purple (or blue but dark) I have seen on a violet.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Very pretty !

Drumheller, AB(Zone 2a)

It does look like it grew a lot Nanna sense you posted when you first bought it,

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

Awesome!

Silver Spring, MD

I has grown Allison. OR perhaps the leaves just settled down. They were almost straight up when I brought it home.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I washed my leaves off again on mine and sprayed with neem oil they are starting to look better ! When I got the plant the foliage was just dull unhealthy looking.

Silver Spring, MD

I haven't quite got the nack of shinny leaves as yet. It has something more to it than cleaning them and "polishing" them. I have noticed that the healthier the plant is the more shine there is in the leaves. Also different light will cause a shine. Anyhow, in the mean time a little wash and a little neem helps them look their very best. I wish I could capture the color of this bloom on camera but I can't. I have tried several times. It is very lovely.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Yesterday I wahsed and neemed mine again . It's much smaller than your's so I'll be hoping for some flowers soon !

Silver Spring, MD

The wait is really worth while. Such a rich royal looking color

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

It's really something one of the Original beauties ! All ten were blue ! When pink came out people went nuts over it. Now look at all the colors we have.
I wonder what food coloring would do in the water.
Just kidding lol

Silver Spring, MD

Very funny!

Have you ever seen Blue Boy before?

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

not in person until I bought it
I'm hopeing maybe some leaves down some will sport to blue girl ! The first girl.

Silver Spring, MD

Wouldn't that be fun!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

yes then I could have both !

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Blue Boy was the first of the original ten ! And Blue Girl sported from Blue Boy was the first girl !

Silver Spring, MD

I think several other traits came from Blue Boy, also.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Oh yes I'm sure ! This being the first and the ten original amazing how many plants . Many Species were used too.
Then how about
Blue Boy Supreme (AVS48) (Odom) Supreme version of BLUE BOY. Standard
AND
Blue Boy Improved (AVS48) Violet-blue. Ovate, pointed, wavy. Large
AND
Double Blue Boy (AVS48) (Westside) Double dark blue. Ovate, cupped-down. Standard
and
Double Blue Boy Supreme (176) 02/06/1950 (Odom) Double blue. Supreme. Large
For a few ! Then the list just keeps going !

Silver Spring, MD

I'm happy with my plain Blue Boy. I like him just the way he is!!!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Oh yesI love mine ( Would not mind if a leaf down gave me Blue Girl ! Then I'd have them both ) but these others came from Sports how we got our first girl ! So you never know. Many other plants came from sported from or have family traits from Blue Boy !
My neighbor came over today. I showed her the coolest plant . She could not get over it either could Hubby.
I have a Mom plant B-man's Etna which I have shared many leaves grown many babies. Mom is looking really good always in bloom and she is filling up with buds and flowers now that will last for months !
Mom, Her flowers are pink with blue Fantasy
B-Man's Etna (B. Curcuruto) Single medium pink ruffled pansy/purple fantasy. Medium green, spooned, quilted, ruffled. Standard
First a few days ago baby bloomed a big deep purple flower as pretty as eyes have ever seen ! It has a deep purple bud under it to soon open. Then today another flower opened it's a medium deep pink and when looking close a few purple spots. It has some other bloom stalks yet to open.
But from afar and close not looking real hard looks like a pretty deep purple flower and pretty deep pink !
It is so cool !

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

My new 'B-Man's Etna' from Deb has its first half-open bloom -- gorgeous color variations on the petals, like Allison said. I can't wait to see more blooms from it!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I sent Deb B-man's Etna wonder if she grew it from the one I sent her !
My Mom B-man's Etna blooms crazy non stop but thi baby one is really cool seeing the bright purple flower and next to it same plant a bright pink flower.
I took pictures will try to post tomorrow.
B-man's Etna last time she flowerd They last for months and within a week or two she is filled up again ! She is filling up with new flowers and buds now !
B-Man's Cosimo is just as beautiful !

Violet gallery used to use 20/10/20 this is why the leaves were much larger than they are now, soil is pro-mix bx, early on i feed the 15/16/17 or pat hancock's high nitrogen the leaves grow better for me. the nutriculture is the new plant marvel that gives very good bloom the color used to be yellow you could see the epson salt granules i think it is blue now. Optimara is very good I use it sometimes for babies i use allegro until the 3 inch pot size alternating with the high nitrate until budding. I am not sure if pat hancock still uses masterblend fertilizer it is another high nitrate, I may get my plant marvel from the shelf at the time a very small end of the spoon was used to one quart water every other watering having over 400 plants at the time i used the same amt. to a gallon of water i had no time to see who got fed when. morganberg

Silver Spring, MD

Hey morganberg. Thanks for the information on feeding. Would love to hear more from you.
