HI,

This is really in your yard? I hope so.

It's outstanding.

WOW! I am jealous, we can't grow many clematis and those we can are not nearly so showy!

Yep this beautiful vine is in my yard in upstate NY. I know that my profile says fort lauderdale but I have a summer home in Hopewell Junction, NY.
It took 3 years to get Josephine to the point of what i would consider a small flush. The plant sits about 3 feet high totally covering a tomato plant trellis. She has about 20 blooms on her measuring about 8 to 10" across and they are in their 2nd week and still uncuring new layers looking as fresh as ever...i really love her!!

Nice! I guess I have to get that one now. Jealous yet Hap? JK.

JK, I am beyond jealous. Don't you see my green ears? Yes, I realize YOU can grow them...HRUMPH....

Brookeville, MD(Zone 7a)

Lol. I hear that only the roots have to be kept cool, not the actual vine. We have very hot summers in MD. Near the 100's every day.

I had very good sucess with my clematises by putting a weed barrier over the planting area, putting down mulch and then putting rocks on top.

But you may get even better results with putting river pebbles (like the kind that you buy @ Home Depot) on the weed barrier, then putting mulch over that and then putting largish light colored rocks over the roots. It also keeps the roots nice and moist so the clematis doesn't get distressed.

And then growing it in the shade?

Even with all that you mentioned, I doubt if it would live.

You reallllllly think so? Do you know anyone that has tried?

Hap, clematis will grow in the shade. I have mostly shade and my clematis grow just fine.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

But you don't live in Florida, pepper....

Edit:

My shade is worse than any sun that you have.

Well, how hot does it get in the summer in Fla? I've only been to Ft. Lauderdale in the winter.

If it gets as hot as here, then I know from experience it'll do just fine. And shade should help. Mine grow in full sun.

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

I agree with the Capt. We some pretty hot summers here and they are doing just fine. In fact this is how hardy they are, I rarely water mine. Looks good, blooms when it should and comes back every year. And we are in a drought. This week is the first time we have had rain in a long time. If it can handle our extremes it can handle yours.

We have 90-100 in July and August with 80-100% humidity. If you don't care for heat, this is not the place for you. I personally love it. Hence the zone 10b.

Still think I could do it?

I think that part of the problem may be that we in 9a and even more in 10b, have such looooong hot/warm seasons, along w/ the 80-100% humidity.

You won't know if you can do til you try hap!! Just get out there and plant one!!!

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

You got it pepper!!! What's to lose...only money....hehehe

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

It's worth the loss!! Just say oh well, who cares, anyone want to go shopping again??? LOL

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Right!
