And I'm trying to convince my eldest that it doesn't take 1/2 cup of salt to dispatch 1 slug.

I put down slug bait a few weeks ago and haven't seen too many of them until this past weekend. Husband and I were cleaning out a seldom used spot and moved some stones. He saw what he thought was a fist sized snail. Picked it up and it was a slug! No joke it was as big as a baseball. My 9-year old son maniacally screamed "I'll get salt!" but we stopped him. Big slug went squish! between rocks.

MARIO;
You TOUCHED IT!! OMGosh Your 9 yr old was RIGHT, SALT, the NO TOUCH method.

Slimy, ohhh so slimy! I do not use scissors or other measures though! Slug bait keeps most of them away and when I find one, I put it in my bucket with clippings and toss it into the yardwaste bin. Blame my husband for the squish.

Is it hypocritical that I feel just a little bad for the poor thing? Looks like his last meal might have been had at the top of the picture. *a lone bugle plays in the distance*

The best way to send them on their way is to cover them with a little soil, and slice them in half with a LONG handled shovel. Make a divot in the ground, and move the now halved slug into the divot. Cover with soil. Go look for the next one, and repeat.
Long-handled shovel is important: PNW slugs can get very large - well at least on my property they do - and the contents of the slug is under pressure, shall we say? DO NOT use a trowel, or you may very well experience the back lash on your face, as I did years ago. One thing for certain - you will never use a trowel again - at least not on the big guys...
If I could, I would surround my property with a beer-filled moat to be rid of them for good. I tire of their preference for my clematis and lilies. Hand pick? For how long? I have filled 5 gallon bucket with slugs, only to find more the next morning. One night I countes 340. There were another 200 the next day. They are like rabbits!

Does anyone have photos of slug/snail damage? Haven't seen as many this year as in past, and no slim trail, but maybe the damage I'm contributing to grasshoppers is actually from slugs. Thanks in advance.

How could you? :*(

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Very easily, SalemSunshine! Yucko to slugs!! I have put sluggo out 2 times now and I think it is actually working! Yea!! I haven't seen very many slugs around at all lately.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 8a)

We have had tons of slugs and rain! up our way. I have found soooo many babies on my Hosta! I think I'm getting them under control with bait, beer and amonia/water spray. I cut one in half like my cousin told me............sick! I won't do that again! She says she goes around with a spear like thing and collects them....what for??? Kabobs? BBQ.....Bait, kill & trash!!

Olympia, WA(Zone 8b)

SOME,
LOL re: kabobs. On one of the slug threads someone said there was a slug cookbook, I think it was in OREG, lol.

Ewww slug cookbook LOL. We put some more sluggo out on Sunday. Thankfully I've seen very few around. I saw one near the edge of our property in a pile of dead brush. My daughter wanted to move it, but it was one of the very big brown woodland ones and he was well away from any of my flowers, so we just let him be. I've not seen any real pests other than these little black things (looks like aphids only different color) near dahlia blossoms. They are dead btw -- score 1 for chemicals.

MARI,

Kabobs! Thanks for making me chuckle! It's been one of those days...
Sometimes it seems that my property is the mecca for slugs - it's hard to keep up with them. I would need an exceptionally long skewer, and then what? Javelin toss?
I've not used "Sluggo" - is this ok if you have animals? (My dogs eat just about everything.)

Tacoma, WA(Zone 8a)

Slugs are here too, but I never see (them) just the slimmy trail, and the holes in my plants.. or no plant at all....errrrrr. My coleious are history.. errrrr.. and one daliah, its in the middle of the bed, and they are munching it, all the others are fine.. so its been sacrificed, just dont eat the healthy ones.

I'm not sure about Sluggo, but the stuff I use is called Slug Magic and it is safe to use around pets.....it works really well too. :o)

Sluggo is safe for pets as well. I use it regularly

Growing tons of lettuce, you can believe I have a vested interest in slug control! I use Escar-Go, a completely natural slug bait made of mostly iron phosphate, which if not ingested by the slugs, will disolve into the soil. I also make a daily visual inspection around my compost pile where they like to hang out and hand pick any I find. I pick em up and toss them into the nearby creek next to my garden where they will hopefully become fish bait. The Escar-Go can be purchased at Gardens Alive.

Regards,
Bill
