Need to know what grows in deep interior shade

Oak Hill, OH(Zone 6a)

I'm new to D'sG and (of course) this forum and relatively new to gardening. I have an area in my house that's DARK. Little or no natural light at all. The 100 watt lamp is on 5-6 hours an evening in summer and 8 hours or so in winter.
Is there ANYTHING I can grow here or do I have to start searching out (ugg!) artificail plants to put here?

If you do a light setup, you can grow just about anything.

Also, ZZ plant... http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/2142/index.html There is one growing in the the underground parking garage management office at work. They have had it in a window that looks onto the inside of the garage for at least a year and I see it every time I park. Not a single bit of sunlight ever hits it - Just overhead fluorescent.

I recently found one at Home Depot and set it up in my daughter's windowless bathroom. I should be able to check on it every few weeks to make sure she has watered it and not have to worry about it too much. It was in a 6 inch pot and I believe it was about $4 to $5.

Oh yeah.....my sister has a Zzzz Plant. They don't even like much water. We were together at a nursery when she bought it a year ago. It is in an interior room with little light, and has doubled in size.

Those lucky bamboo that you just stick in an inch of water will live anywhere dark. I've had some in an interior guest bathroom for two years, and they are doing great. Just keep them in about an inch of water.

We have a snake plant http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/431/index.html that gets almost no light and a ZZ Plant that is on the kitchen table but about 6 feet away from the window which is a small window

Thanks for these 2 ideas.

I see snake plants all over but don't know where to get a ZZ plant locally (central Louisiana). I'll call around to some nurseries. I have a big corner to fill so I'll need sveral plants.

Anymore suggestions?

They have had ZZ plants at our Home Depot for about a month or so. Maybe they might have some.

I am also very new to gardening, so thank you everyone for all the suggestions! I also have an area in my house that gets very little or almost no natural light. I have had a lady palm (rhapis excelsa) there for 3 or 4 months and it seems to be doing well. Much as in Marie's comment on the ZZ plant, it also doesn't seem to need much water. Thanks to all the comments here I am going to search for a ZZ plant now!

I got my ZZ at Walmart. I've seen them at Lowe's and HD but they were more expensive there.

An old fashioned plant that used to be grown indoors in Victorian times and we commonly see outside in the south... Aspidistra elatior ~ cast iron plant. Described as withstanding poor conditions and surviving where few other houseplants could. Hence the common name cast iron plant. There is supposed to be a less common varigated variety too. Have never seen one of them.
Don't discount the sansevieria (snake plant) as too common. There are many unusual varieties out there. The photo is a s. cylindrica which is slow growing but can get huge...

It's hard to show the round stems from a picture. They are about one inch thick and mine are 2 1/2 feet tall. It can be a monster. My cat collection like to rub their chinny chin chins on the points so it looks a little bedraggled but here is another closer photo.

I have a Marble Queen pothos which has lived in my bathroom since December. There is no natural light in there at all. It's doing fine, growing, though perhaps more slowly than it would if it got more light, and has not lost its variegation.
My Snake Plant gets no natural light in the corner of our den, either, and it is doing fine. Even putting up baby leaves.
Lucky Bamboo, the kind you grow in water, is in complete shade in my living room, as well as a Heartleaf Philodendron.

This photo is a miniature Sansevieria. Excuse the cat tail. Not sure of the variety (plant not cat). I keep them outdoors so they live with some neglect. I do shelter them when temperatures drop.

Again, not sure of the variation. Most of my plants are flea market finds or passalongs. This one could be Moonshine. It is less than a foot tall and the leaves are 3-4 inches wide. It is pale in color whether it is kept inside or out.

Great ideas! Thanks. I don't have transportation until next week but maybe then I can scout about for some.

I was at Wal-Mart a couple of days ago and they didn't have much at all in the way of house plants. Lowes a couple of weeks ago didnt' either - and their outside plants were the worst specimens I'd ever seen - raggedy, yellow horrible things. Don't know if it was because of the time of year or what. I've seen good plants there before. - But newbie that I am, about a year ago, I bought a Majesty Palm from them and it died within a few months. THEN I learned they don't make good houseplants no matter what the little tag says!
