How do I get rid of those white cottony things?

Cincinnati, OH

I guess they are mealy bugs? I found a succulent with them and it was dying, so I pitched it. Yesterday, I was transplanting my AV's and found a couple of sticky cottony like clumps on one of them. One on one of the leaves and one on the base of the same plant. I know that for regular plants you would seriously spray them, but I thought you weren't supposed to get AV leaves wet. Help, I don't want to lose my baby. I wasn't so concerned about the NOID succulent, but boy am I concerned about the AV. I just got into these in the last couple of years and I am quite proud of them.

I'm sure someone can help you, I'm sorry I can't, I just got interested in them a few months ago. I know everyone here is so nice, someone will have an answer. Good luck.

If you only have one or two you can easily get rid of them by dipping a q-tip in rubbing alchol and gently stroking them off. Make sure you get every single one. Check morning and night for a week. If a new one appears use the alchol q-tip to get it off. This works very well for me.

When you have them under control make sure you have enough ventilation and make sure that the violets are not touching each other. Every plant should have it's own space.

Hope this helps.

Thank you, I will try that. I think part of the problem is that I thought it would be nice to put some of them together to make a larger basket. I had four in one planter. That is why I was transplanting them, back to their own spaces. One good thing that came of this, I put in 4, took out 5. Trust me, I will never do that again. I enjoy them much more when I can actually see the leaves and differentiate which one is blooming.

Rob from Violet Barn says Mealies are stubborn creatures!
Two chemicals that we've found to be fairly (but not completely) effective are Enstar and Marathon.
I myself thought Neem Oil works good ? I'd also take your plants out of the pots check soil and root and crowns all foliage .
Here please go to this link and read what Rob from Violet Barn reccomends and says about them.
