Which summer bulbs do you grow?

North East England, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Now that the spring bulbs are over I always feel a bit sad. Apart from lilies and alliums I don't have that many summer bulbs to look forward to. What do you grow?

I grow lilies, dahlia, and gladiolus. Last year I had caladium too, but I didn't dig them up and they rotted. I really don't like having to dig them up, so I don't grow too many. I do mostly perennials and some annuals. Tamara

I love Eucomis, the pineapple lily. In your climate you could probably leave them in the ground. I know you like white flowers, so why not try E autumnalis?

Ok, I'll look that one up!

dahlias, canna, eucomis, glads, caladium, lilies. I was told you can grow freesias in summer, so I've planted some.

Shenandoah Valley, VA

I have glads I bought on sale at WalMart years ago and stuck in the bed next to my back porch. Never been lifted in the fall and they keep coming up every year. I'm sure it's warmer there than in the rest of the yard.

I have dinnerplate dahlias there too that I've never lifted and they're thriving.

I have oriental lilies and crocosima too. This year I planted more oriental lilies and some Pretoria cannas. I won't push my luck with the cannas and will dig those this fall.

I also plan to get some alliums for planting this fall - some of the large purple ones like Sensation I think.

I've often admired the pictures of the eucomis in the bulb catalogs, Knipofia. Are they easy? They sure are pretty.

You can get year-round mileage out of amaryllis. Mine bloom several times a year, including summer. They spend only the warm weather seasons outside.

Do my Eremurus count?! (I am so happy with them, I think I've posted the pics everywhere! (Sorry!).

I also grow bellamcanda and crocosmia (many kinds) and of course all of the alliums (so fun).

Oh, and I LUV Liatris in my butterfly garden. We planted 3 or 4 kinds.

Also Colocasias "Nigra" in big pots by the front door.

And we put in all kinds of lilies in this year (and I fear we will need a 55 gallon drum of "Liquid Fence" to protect them)

And the amaryllis are put outside in summer, but I haven't had summer re-bloom like andidandi so I will work on that. Maybe they need more sun...

I "dig" bulbs but I don't want to DIG them!!! LOL I don't know if it is cause I am in Texas, but I leave mine in the ground and they have been doing fine. I have a raised, well amended bulb bed, with good drainage. We mulch in the fall and actually mulch in the summer too, when it gets really hot and dry. This may sound crazy but I have summer bulbs and spring bulbs in the same bed which means that both seasons I am watering the dormant bulbs too. They seem to come up and bloom when each is supposed to. For spring I have Hyacinth, Daffodils, Tulips, some type of lilly that I think has the name Peter Pan or something like that, anemones, and freesias. I would have more of them but the first year I planted them I dug them and they ruined. I forget why. I had over 100 of various types. The ones that have been coming back for the last several years are the ones I missed. LOL But I plan to get more this fall. For summer I have glads, calla lillies, daylillies. This year I have added more glads (because I did the same with them as I did the spring bulbs the first year), callas, caladiums (supposed to be a sun variety), and was going to add dahlias, but didn't really have room so I put the dahlias in some bare spots in my rose bed, which is also raised and good drainage. We mulch there too, so I don't plan to dig them either. We will see. I dont expect the caladiums to come back because mine don't seem to ever come back. I guess they do rot if left out.
