Help, I think I killed it

Cincinnati, OH

I took custody of my Grandmother in laws plumeria that she had for years. I transplanted it and it bloomed for the first time in about 10 years, she said. It was just magnificent and fragrant, like a gardenia. It bloomed for the past three years. Over the winter, it went into dormancy as usual, and then........I must have overwatered it. We had a first communion party at our house, and my DH was here, and I think he watered it too. We had put it in a room out of our sight since the leaves were not back yet. It totally started drooping and I tried to get cuttings, but I think it is too late. In less than a week, it was almost unsalvageable. Out of a 5 tipped, 4 foot plant, I only got 3 cuttings, and they are just barely past the stem rot area. The longest one is only about 4 inches. I am just beside myself with grief. 1st, because it must have suffered and 2nd, because I am just sick with guilt. If anyone could possibly give me a good lead on someone with a rooted plant for a good price, I sure would appreciate it. Hers was a really old one with white flowers and a yellow throat. I am sure that it was common, being so old. I am so desperate, and so sad. Please also post condolences here. Join me in my mourning.

Oh Kay, I am so sorry!! I have my grandmother's Christmas Cactus - it's around 15 years old - I can only imagine how I'd feel if something happened to it. We've got a lot of knowledgeable folks here...I'm sure someone can steer you in the right directions. I know a lot of them rec. sending cuttings to Florida Colors for grafting - I'm just not sure how long the cutting needs to be. Maybe Clare will check in "here" for you.

Hi Kay, I am so sorry for your loss, but it sounds like a common plumie that can be easily replaced. I wouldn't bother with grafting or rooting the tips that you have left since that variety is so easily replaced. They are probably in poor shape after being dormant and stressed and possibly wouldn't graft or root well because of these reasons. I highly recommend Florida Colors: http://www.floridacolors.com/ as a place to find a replacement. You can order a grafted tree from them at a very reasonable price. Brad's Buds and Blooms has rooted plants and is great: http://www.bradsbudsandblooms.com/ HawaiiSandy sells on eBay and is Jim Little's daughter: http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQfgtpZ1QQfrppZ50QQfsooZ1QQfsopZ1QQsassZhawaiisandy (She only has one at the moment for a rare variety, but she will offer more soon.) These are my three favorite sellers. Here is a thread here with Florida Colors 2006 offerings: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/571517/ If you are interested in a white/yellow which smells wonderful, consider Dwarf Deciduous, San Germain, and/or Celadine among others.
