so incredibly beautiful.

Are they big leaves, or are they starting out with small leaves, and with each new one it is getting bigger?

I was wondering because that is what mine is doing.

Yours is a very pretty leaf.

Very nice. It appears I lost mine when the heater went out this winter :(

Just means I'll have to get another one!
(And take better care of it)

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

yea, the leaves are smaller right now. They will get bigger as it puts out more leaves. I thought I had lost mine also.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I know all winter in the GH mine kept putting on a few leaves, but then a few leaves would die, I don't think I ever had over 3 or 4 small leaves at a time. So when the time came to set it out I wasn't sure on what it would do. Then I started putting water in a bucket and letting it set in the sun so the Chlorine could be removed and watering it with that, and now it is doing much better, of course I have fed it a couple of times. I think while it was in the GH it didn't like the chlorine in the water it was receiving when I did give it a drink of water. I'm not sure if that even had anything to do with it, but I know last summer I did the same thing and it looked really good except I think it only had about 3 or 4 leaves at a time. But they were nice size leaves. This year I am hoping for a better show.

How much sun are they getting now ?
I'm having a hard time trying to give mine the right balance. In shade they wilt but even with just morning tropical sun they burn. I have them in bright indirect light at the moment.

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

Mine is on my front porch which gets bright indirect light. Seems to like that, it is putting out one leaf after another.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I keep mine sitting under a tree. It gets bright sunlight. The only burning mine gets is for the leaves that are completely white. They will usually die anyway. That's where I kept it last year as well and I water it with water that is kept in the sun, or use rain water when I have it. They don't like the direct sun or do they like salt.

Key West, FL(Zone 11)

I've been watching this one unfold for the last few days and was so happy to have my first all white leaf (except for one small green spot) no burning yet, I think the white is pretty amazing.

Whenever I have a all white it doesn't last very long. For some reason the leave is much thinner then the others. Celt33040 please let me know how your all white does for you? But I am like you the do think the white is very pretty and clean looking.Linda

I think the plant I have is this Alocasia also. I have the mother plant, which goes semi dormant in winter, I take all the pups off every year usually twice. Mine does best in a container. I have lost many by planting them in the ground. No two are ever the same. Some tend toward green most are variegated. Here is this springs crop....

dale very nice and I do like the other plants you have next to it. Yes I leave mine in a pot as will, then that way I can move it to the gh when and if needed.

Key West, FL(Zone 11)

Dale , nice combo. I need to start mixing things together in pots.

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

I am hoping for an all white one. This one is about 50%.

Thats great variegation, Im dissapointed when theres more green than white, I had a cool one that was split one half white one green , left and right hand side.

Rylaff I hope you are ready for some rain, we were pounded all morning here in the Keys by this TS( its about time we had some rain) looks like its coming your way.

Ive been collecting water all morning.

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

We so desperately need it. I do hope it comes this way. It has only rained once in the last two months or so. Everything is so so dry.

Tampa, FL(Zone 10a)

We are in the sights of this TS too, can't wait. Would love to have a day off, some fresh water in the barrels and not have to water the yard everyday.

Anyone reading this need a 'variegata' I have extras and am looking for other colcasia/alocasia that are uncommon.

Dale, what is that! I need it.

Key West, FL(Zone 11)

And there he is......
Dale_a_gardener somebody brought you name up in regard to a tropical lily question I had over at http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/612929/

you must be a well known wise man

would you mind taking a look.

Key West, FL(Zone 11)

Rylaff
I see you at all the same forums I like, do you have a picture of your garden ?

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

I did a walkthrough series of pictures a couple of years ago but so much has changed. I guess I should do it again. I usually hang out in the tropical, daylily, lilies, vines, and water garden forums. How about you?

Key West, FL(Zone 11)

Usualy im in
Vines and climbers( where i just left you a funny post) Tropicals, Fragrant gardening ( my favorite) just discovered Lilies( going to try some here) Cannas (recently) Rhododendrons and Relatives ( for my vireyas) and tried Design aka curb appeal(didnt like that one).

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

You are at most of the ones I go to also. I have a canna bed too. I have to spray them frequently because the darn leaf rollers love them so.

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

rylaff, I love your pic on June 10th! Mine are just waking up and seem to be really slow this year for some reason.

Tell me....why are you wanting all white? For me they only burn quickly and get kinda ugly. But how would I know this year I'll be happy for anything....LOL....tooooo slow!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Mine are still very small and this is the third summer. How big will they get? I have heard that variegated ears don't require much fertilizer because it makes them lose their variegation. Now, I don't know if that is all variegated ears or just the one I had when I was told this. Does anyone know? I'd love to be able to fertilize everything at the same time and not leave out two pots.

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

Brugie, I'd be careful. I remember posting last year about A macrohiza variegata and I think it was Kyle that told me to stay away from fertilizers or it would lose it's variegation. Check with him before you do.

Tampa, FL(Zone 10a)

Brinda,

I feed mine lightly once a month, it does help, (So far) no harm, but, heavy feeding changes them to almost solid green and they don't seem to grow any faster. They do love to be watered.

Thanks Brin. Kyle was the one that told me about another one, but I just wasn't sure if he meant that one only.

Love the lantana.

Key West, FL(Zone 11)

Just an update on my white leaf, still going strong no burning 12"x9". I have one leaf waning and one opening all about the same size . the new one that is unrolling is pretty much all white too.

Im worried that it will suffer if ends up with too much white . Although its going to look pretty cool.

How about epsom salts on this one?Is that considered a fertilizer ,I just discovered it helps prevent burning on my new variegated canna which also has a lot of white.

Maybe we could have a variegated forum?

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I read somewhere last summer that the Alocasia Macrorhiza Variegata doesn't like salt.

Hartselle, AL

Dale-a-Gardner - I just love your potted flowers you have hanging on your banister. What are they called? How do you have them hanging up?

Sheri

Hartselle, AL

Also, Dale, what is the variegated plant in the back of the pic you posted on June 10. I'm a little late getting in here, but am pretty new to DG.

Sheri

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

dale, i was wondering the same thing. what is plant in the back (not the hilos or the Alocasia macrorhiza 'Variegata').

all of you have some awesome plants. the white leaves are way cool! it's now on the list of 'must haves.'

rylaff, i agree with celt, you should post some pics of your garden, especially the cannas and lilies. i remember coming across some from years ago and saved them for future inspiration. i love your taste in plants!
