The Vitex on Maple!

Dallas, TX

Since I was doing cuttings this morning, I decided to go down and take another shot at the Vitex tree ... Lo and Behold. mine eyes had seen the glory, It was breathtaking! All I wanted was some clean tips to cut off and try to propergate, but it was all full of flowers, I just started taking pictures before I mutulated it. Itried pulling some branchs from the inside, but I still need more, trying to get at least twenty four cutting so everyone will have a piece ... maybe I better try for fifty and I might get twenty four. ;) A man saw me and came over showed me another there, it was tree and huge. In his nostalgic way he told me he once lived in the house before it burned down ... how much he loved to see the tree in bloom .. I left him sitting there ... on the curb ... that separated the house (that use to be there) from the Maple Strip Mall.

Look around underneath the plants--you'll see tons of babies soon. Very reliable reseeder.

Ok, let's see if we can't try that again...cut and paste does not work well, even if they are your own pics.

Oh Debbie I just love your place, you got everything going on. Debbie Mitch told me the same thing, but I dont see any babies. This bush is growing off that huge stump that left in the ground.
Do you mean after the blooming peroid is over?

yes, kinda after the first flush--you are farther north--I'm seeing (or rather pulling..lol) them now, about a month after that pic.
Thanks Sylvia!

Jackie, it might be too early. Its in full blooming season ... I feel so guilty I cut it. hard to get a good cutting with all that blooming.

Watch for the seeds Sylvia, maybe you can start some from seed if your cuttings don't make it.

Let me know Sylvia--I'll start you some for fall RU if you can't get them to take.

Debbie...your vitex is vitally beautiful!! I just bought one yesterday! One one I got has purple on the underside of the leaves...does yours have that or did I get a different one?

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

There are several varieties of vitex. Some are more blue than purple....mine look like Sylvia's pics. I originally started mine from seeds from a very kind friend.

There are also pink and white. I planted seed from all three last fall. I don't know if it was because some of the seed were better polinated or if some are just easier to germinate but the pink had a higher percentage germination followed by white and then purple. They are also fairly easy to root. I got my pink by stopping on I35 between Belton and Georgetown and taking cuttings from one of the large ones growing between the main road and the access road. Really glad I did as a few months later they removed all of the vitex along the road. BTW my dh sat in the truck hiding as I was liberating the cuttings. He had visions of my being carted off to jail or a mental hospital at any minute.

Patsy, your DH hiding reminded me of how my little sister hid in the car when Mom and I stopped at garage sales!!
Debbie and Sylvia, please ...please start a cutting for me from your Vitex and bring with you to the Arlington Swap. I will have something as it gets closer to trade.

Debbie, by all means get some started! ....you are not really going to trust me with this task are you? LOL

Sheila I will be so glad to see at the Arlington RU. :)

I will start seeds real soon so they will be good sized by Oct--these "pups" are 3 years old and are in absolutely the worst soil in my garden. Took me awhile to go through all my garden pics and find a good pic with just them...here's one with a cucumber plant on May 6th...

And the other 3 year old which is bigger.

Patsy could I tempt you with any of the bazillion seeds I have for some of the pink and white vitex seeds? Maybe some plumeria? (shamelessly begging again here...lol)

Debbie, I am sure we can work out a trade. I can't do much this week. I am serving on a Federal jury right now and do not get home until late. The judge seems to think the trial part will end today so all left will be the jury agreeing. D-mail me and remind me.
