Guess what!? My Eremurus 'Spring Valley' are starting to bloom! I am so excited since I didn't expect to get one single flower after the discussions on the forums last fall about how little luck others had had with them.
I have them planted in our mixed border with purple and yellow bearded iris, allium multibulbosum and 'globemaster', gaillardia, nepetas among other perennials...Eremurus 'Spring Valley' are supposed to be an early blooming variety from Brent & Becky's.

Eremurus Erupted!
That's so pretty, tabasco. I love foxtail lilies. Did you get those at Brent and Bekcy's?
Beautiful combo.
I think that even the neighbors will approve.
ROX
LOL Yes, my neighbor came over and asked about them!
Yes, Spring Valley Hybrids from Brent and Becky's. Supposedly they bloom two weeks earlier than the other hybrids which is why I wanted to try them with my globemaster alliums, etc.
I understand Buggycrazy may have eremurus on her website. Gemini_sage purchased his from her. I also purchased 3 'Cleopatra' from Scheepers. They are about two feet tall but need more time to grow, I think.
ROX, what is the prognosis for Eremurus in view of the deer? Are they deer dessert? I bought an extra big bottle of Liquid Fence and some Deer Scram, too, just in case. So far the deer are staying away from that garden....maybe because of the Giant Allium planted all around?
I have had three planted for years about 10 feet from the daylily bed the deer were devastating and the deer never touched them, so I'd say they're safe from deer.
I've been eyeing those from B&B and the mix from Scheepers. I may order some this fall. The three I have are all yellow.
Just beautiful!
I've wanted to grow some for years, but never did. Stayed away for some reason.
You may have swayed me. I'll just have to check to see how well they take heat and humidity.
Robert.
Thanks for your good information about Eremurus. I am enjoying them a lot and I hope the deer don't get them!
Will be off now to California now, though, so I won't get to see them finish. I hope they hang on until rudbeckias and daisies start blooming. At least the neighbors may begin to understand the method to my (gardening) madness then!
Take care and Happy gardening. t.
Your foxtails are excellent. Sadly, I can only appreciate your photos as my foxtails succumbed to the weird weather this spring. The plants survived but the flower scapes aborted. Maybe in '07.
Hey, Tabasco, if you need any more eremerus, Jody has included the Spring Valley mix in the B&B bulb coop. Great price too.
After looking at all the pics and how great they are, I'm bummed. I've planted these things three times now and they promptly kick the bucket about a month after I see growth. Now I realize I'm pretty good at killing certain plants, but I didn't think you were supposed to be able to kill these by just looking at them (and yes, I'm ugly, but not that ugly!). I give up!
I think they need great drainage don't they? I had them for a few years before mine
died out. I may have crowded them with out with too many tall neighbors ...
T- that border is beautiful!
