Howards Nursery in Austin is closing after almost 100 yrs

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

I believe Howard's was opened in about 1910 or so....and they are closing in June, I hear. I don't know if they will have huge sales or not..I just heard this today from the owner of Shoal Creek Nursery, another independent nursery here in Austin.

According to this source, remaining stock is on sale at 30% off until the nursery closes at the end of June. Look at the article under "History." http://www.austinexplorer.com

Connie, what is that plant in the pic?

your plant is castor bean, probably Carmencita variety, not 100% sure (but almost)

...thats what I thought it might, but I never seen that color. Beautiful! I would love some seeds from that ... :)

I just bought the castor bean plants at "Gardens," a nursery here that specializes in unusual plants. I love purple foliage, so had to have some! I know they get big, so I'm looking for a place to plant them this evening.

I will certainly save the seeds, if someone tells me how! The only thing about saving is that I THINK one has to allow the plant to die and the seeds to dry on the plants,,,,yes? If so, I can't usually stand to see dead stuff, so I pull it out before I should. Let me know if that is correct.

Thanks for the link to Howard's site, Patrob. I'm going there tomorrow to see what they have left.

Dont ask me Connie, I am not a seed person my self unless it self sows. lol

Sylvia,

I'm coming to Dallas this coming Friday. What nurseries would you recommend that I "MUST SEE"??
I will be in the area by the DWF airport...right by the Speedway (my step-son sells Pulte homes there and owns one...we'll stay with him). I like to go to the museums in Ft. Worth so any nurseries in that area would be a good rec. also.

Thanks!
Connie

PS. I can't wait for another State Round Up so I get to meet all you guys!

Dallas, TX

Connie there are some nice ones here, that I dont frequent too often since I became a Hosta. Three place for sure, Calloways on Greenville. There is Northhaven Garden off Northhaven and central, one on Lovers lane and Inwood ... got to find the name. Did you say your son lives near that new speedway? Is that in Keller? There is an awsome place off 183, its huge! Is known for its wonderful Tree collections.
I got someone to contact will get back with you.

Connie, do you ever go to the Kimmel (sp?) museum in Ft Worth? it is a must see for the art and also for the wisteria growing in pergolas outside the coffee shop. The prettiest thing I have seen ever in the way of wisterias!

I love Northhaven Gardens so much. Do go there if you have time. The stuff in the tropical greenhouse is unbelievable, also the rose collection.

Connie.....D-mail Luciludog...She keeps a Notebook of nurseries in the area! I borrowed it last year and had quite a time in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. Spent a weekend thumbing thru, and tracking some of her suggestions...all were great! Had so much fun, missed the Botanical Gardens, ran out of time.....Sandi

Sylvia, thanks soooo much for the 3 nurseries. That will keep me busy!

Vossner....I love the Kimbell, and I belong to the new Modern...I love both of them! (But then I love museums period...I go to them wherever I travel! My latest was the new Native American Museum in DC...love the building design!! The displays are not well-lighted...I emailed them about that!)

The new Modern in Ft. W. has an award-winning restaurant in it...and there is a reflection pool completely around the museum...stunning design! And then the art...art?
art!!! Well, what can I say? I don't always agree with modern art, but it is thought-provoking! :)

I'll D-mail Luciludog...thanks, Sandi. Are you still coming on the 8th!!??
