Any ideas?????????

this little guy zipped past me in the shaded woods about 10' from the river. It was about the size of a Painted Lady. Can't find anything in any of my books so wondering if it is a moth and not a butterfly. Can anyone ID it? This is the only pic I got. It flew off as I tried to go around for a better shot

DonnaB ..

Any idea of the name/species of the tree upon which s/he sits there?

Probably a Oak.The woods were full of them. If I get back there this week end I will look. It only flew to it when I walked past and startled it from where ever it was lol. I was on the look out for snakes as I walked and didn't see where it came from

Donna,

By the shape and size of the wings I thought perhaps some form of an Admiral but I looked through my North American butterfly field guides and tried a few internet searches but couldn't find any butterfly with those markings on the underside of its wings.

Also forwarded your photo to a local lepidopterist who's done extensive traveling and photographing of the world's butterflies and he was stumped as well.

We are thinking perhaps it is a moth??? Hope you are able to find more and share the photographs. Am curious to know what it is.

Howdy .. to the both of you ..

I was thinking, that it may've been a Tupelo Gum tree (seeing the bark). Can sometimes lend a bit of aid ..

There were a couply 'spread-winged' Skippers .. that had some resemblance on their underwings .. to the 'white barring' that's visible from behind the tree. Here's one. (mindja, some resemblance) >

that was my first thought when I saw it but if you notice it has 2 stripes and they appear kind of orangish to me. Maybe I will get lucky and find it again

Yep, but I figgered that no matter what it turns out to be .. that [it] may very well could've been [two] - the one met up with the other on the tree trunk. Jes a thought ...

Still lookin' ..
