I made pickles! 12 Quarts and 1 pint of pickled okra. Whew! My house stinks.
Also bought some new plants today. 2 Durantas (anyone know anything about them?) a Mandevilla and some other type of vine with pretty red flowers.....looks like a Mandevilla but has smaller, glossier leaves. Also a moon flower. Now, where to plant?????
Digging up the lettuce and zuchinni tomorrow.
Here's a pretty sky.

Cucumbers, Durantas and What Nots
That's a pretty cool sky for Houston.
Neat photo! Pickled okra? I am jealous. About 200 miles north and our okra is not near ready. I love duranta but it will not overwinter up here. Enjoy it, it should bloom all summer. Loves the warm. Same with the mandevilla. I would like to see a photo of the other vine with the red blooms.

The above link gives you some info on the Duranta. It's a beautiful plant.
Thansk guys. My digital camera is kaputsky but as soon as I fix (or replace) I'll send a photo of the vine. I'm really curious what it is. Very pretty.

Hi Dancy,
Thanks for the website but I get an error trying to open.
I bought 2 durantas today and plan to shape into small trees - I've got perfect spots for them.
Kristi
600 miles north and my first okra seed germinated about 5 days ago. I had to wait for the ground temp. to warm up before planting it.
Wow! I should have enough okra in a few weeks to make a couple of pint of pickles and we'll eat it fried and stewed and any other way we can think of. How many okra plants will you have?
The leaves look like mandevilla, could it possibly be in red? Glad your camera is back to work.
It does look like a mandevilla but the leaves are much smaller and darker green. It's really pretty. I have to get some more trellis'.
its a mandevilla
just a "different" type?
yes

Mandevilla, also known as Dipladenia...or Red Riding Hood. I believe there is supposed to be a difference, but no one seems to know what it is. Anyway, I sure don't. LOL
CJ
The leaves really are different but the flower looks the same. I suspected it was a mandevilla when I bought it (no tag and misplaced on the shelves of the nursery) but when I brought it home and placed it next to the mandevilla I already have, there's a difference.
You guys are a wealth of information. I've learned more in the last five days than in 4 years of reading books and Google.
Thank you!
Yep,
Mandevilla Red Riding Hood...Lowe's sells lots of those down in south Texas. They never seem to be as prolific as the plain yellow mandevillas though.
The duranta you will love. They can be made into hedges, a shrubby bush or pruned into a small tree. They can grow close to 15 feet if the conditions are right. I have several around my yard and they are excellent butterfly and hummingbird magnets!!! In September 2005 Duranta was found to be the larval host plant for the rare Marius Hairstreak butterfly.

What a pretty caterpillar!
The red plant is mandevilla sanderi, also known as diplendenia splendens. The dark red is a newer color.
The regular pink mandevilla(most common is Alice DuPont) is mandevilla x amabilis sometimes sold as mandevilla splendens.
Cat, the yellow ones do great down here don't they? I got two of the red ones this year and they're doing good too.
I love those plants too--they do get huge.
Love that duranta! I just planted 2 babies.
I noticed about 10-15 different varieties of mandevillas at Cornelius' the other day...hadn't realized there were so many. I just know we're overdue here for a wicked winter and even last year froze alot of my stuff to the ground--mind you, not till Feb and everything recovered quite quickly due to longer daylength. Frost just sorta 'blankets' the Katy Prairie sometimes.
I ordered a red crossvine from Ecolage figuring it would survive the winter better.
But the mandevillas are surely pretty. They had one pink and white almost striped petals down the length of the trumpet--really spectacular looking...also had a hefty price. But was in a huge 5-10 gallon pot.
anyone rootting cuttings? I have one but would like to raise more. Not sure where to begin.
If you wish to propagate more mandevillas, they are easily started from cuttings. Just place the cutting in a glass of water and they root very easily.
I will definitely start more plants.....
