Is it going to be a double pink? LOL

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I was so shocked to see this one. I had repotted it a few weeks ago and did not even see a bud, I was squeezing past it and saw this huge bloom. It is huge.

It has a such a girly girl shape.

And it is turning colors. Sadly, it is so cold here. Last night I got in late and it was like winter out there. So the color will not be true yet.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

That is a great name, Gloria! We went out for dinner and got home so late I forgot to check on this one,

But earlier today I saw this one. It is only its second bloom and it is a bit hinky still. I am hoping it won't be deformed. It has some issues too work out. LOL But it is a true color pink.

And one of Red's kids, a real dark one. But the tendrils are shorter than I like.

I will try to get a good pic the next time I go down to the plots. They were all blurry for some reason. I was too close and the wind was blowing too hard.

Hinky-Adj. Screwed up, not normal, all wrong.....
From Marcie's Unabridged Dictionary of Slanguage and Gardening Terms.....LOL!

I just wanna know when my brugs are gong to do something! Wah! It is 97 degrees outside and I am having to water everything at least once a day to keep it from wilting...but the good news is at least my brugs are starting to put on a lot of new growth...so maybe they will do something this year. They are about 4-5 feet tall...and yes they have a "y". But I just planted them this Spring, so maybe they are adjusting to the change from my sister's Florida sand to my Alabama clay....

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

THANKS all! I love it. I am so hoping it stays a big beauty. I love it when a seedling blooms for the first time. It is such excitement even if it is a dud but when it looks like a winner, it is even more fun.

LOL Voss, wonky??? I need to look that one up. Hinky means not quite right. Like me. LOL The double pink is huge but its shape is a bit off. I am hoping with some regular feeding and watering now, it will have perfect blooms. Doubles sometimes look a bit off the first flowering I have noticed. And sometimes they look that way forever.

Oh Brinda................ yesterday Tom on his own went out and moved a huge plant I needed moved. And he knocked that bloom off as he went past! He was so proud of himself for moving it as a surprise and the fact it was his birthday too, I said nothing but smiled broadly. Too bad he moved the wrong plant too. LOL. Now I need to make up something so he moves the right plant and moves the first one back. So I have to wait for a new bloom. SHUCKS!

WOW Bamabelle, you have that definition right. LOL
Onced Yed you should get blooms quickly. Try holding back on the high nitrogen fertilizer. Also I find Messenger causes them to bloom fast. It might be worth it to try it. Sounds like you have some nice big plants about to knock your sox off!!

I looked close today adn found some of the older elaves had the assymetrical shape to them...and a few of the newer elaves had it as well...but most of the newer leaves were symmetrical. I wonder if thye were about to bloom and then when I repotted them it screwed up the bloom schedule. Lately they ahve put on a heck of a lot of new growth on the 'trunks'. I'm working on a lilmited budget so I haven't bought any Messenger. I've been feeding them Miracle Grow and Epsom salts. I'll post some pics of the assymetrical leaves and the new growth.

Last shot of new growth...the previous image seems to have several new stems started in additin to all the leaves coming out of the 'trunk'

I'm hoping one of you more experienced 'brug heads' will look at one of these pics and tell me, "Why that is a bud coming up right there! Can't you see it?" LOL! Seriously, though...I"m sure part of the reason they have been slow to bloom was because they were transferred and because it took me a while to get any fertilizer going on them. My sis kept reminding me that they were heavy feeders, so I finally bought the Miracle Grow because it wasn't too expensive and I could use it on all my plants. I haven't seen any Messenger around here, sop I will probably have to order it. I had to order the Thrucide for my cannas and passafloras...and just last week I finally found someone in the area with Superthrive. It is hard to find a lot of stuff around here unless you are looking for farming stuff...then you can find all kinds of stuff for tomatoes, cotton, silver queen corn, watermelons, etc...

I really do not see any Ys in your pics but that doesn't mean there are none for you took such close ups. Brugs often put out tons of side growth. I snap all of that off for I prefer a standard form. Your best bet to see a bud is in the crotch of a Y. Look there. I didn't have time to really look hard at your pics for I am having people over soon. I thought I may have seen a bud in picture #2 but can't blow up your picture clearly enough.

I took this pic to show you subequal leaves and a bud in the crotch.

I also have used Miracle Grow for years but the older formula has a very high nitrogen content. I use with great results on all my in ground brugs as well as some of my potted ones the cheapest 16-16-16 granular form Home Depot sells or even 20-20-20. I leave it up to the plant to decide which it wants to eat more of. LOL

Epsom salts should probably not be used very often, but just as a pick me up once in awhile.

And the second brug in its entirety...The yellow leaves are from when I transplanted them and beofe I started fertilizing them. I have lot of pics of the Y's.....there are usually two or three Y's on each side of each brug.

Ok, I am still not sure I see any Ys. There is a difference between Ys and a side branching which can look like a Y. Where did you say this was from? A seedling or a cutting? If it is a cutting from above the Y it does not need to Y to flower though it will of course with time but it looks to me like a cutting from below the first Y.

Once a brug Ys it then keeps forming Ys on up. The first Y then forms a Y on each side of the Y. They in turn do the same on up, each time multiplying the number of Ys and the flowering wood. I do not see the multiple Ying on up I should see.

Look at this picture. http://www.slmh.net/mysteriousy.htm

Brugs can seem difficult to understand till you live with a few of them a full year, then they are a breeze. 2 years and you are an expert if you grow more than a couple of them. So do not be confused or discouraged.

Are you calling this a Y, marked with a pink ? It looks more like a side branch to me.

Thumbnail by Kell
Headland, AL(Zone 8a)

My sis, who gave me the brugs, explained to me that these are side branches...she said I need to look for Y at the top of the plant, not at the bottom where she rooted them. Guess it will take time and I need to be patient. But its just so hard when I see all you guys' gorgeous brugs! LOL!

Thanks for your help, Kell!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Great Bamabelle, and do not worry. By the size of those plants flowers are not far behind!! And once they start flowering they just keep on!

Headland, AL(Zone 8a)

Kewl beans. She has such a green thumb, I'm sure they will be great plants. I'm excited to see how they turn out because she crossed two brugs to get these...so I'm not sure what colors they will be. OTOH, they are cuttings, so I am sure she has the parents somewhere in her jungle.

She is bringing me a datura that is white and purple...I wonder what would happen if you crossed a datura with a brug... Hmmmm..... probably nothing.... they are probably too diverse to cross... but it sure would make some interesting specimens if it worked.....

kell your flowers are always so lovely, I have yet to have my first double, and that PINK is to die for.

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

Oh Kell, I just got back into town. I just love your Dbl. pink. I will keep watching to see how it does for you.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Some people have tried crossing them Bamabelle but as far as I know , it didn't work. Sounds like you are going to have a great garden this year.

Thanks Doris. If I ever get my seeds labeled I will send you some double pink hope to bes. LOL Your yard is going to be so special this summer.

Oh Patricia, were you on another great trip? I have been going to Sebastopol a lot lately to nursery hop with rose forum people. You must come with us!! Lali comes also. We go to the best nurseries and have a great time. Do you know Kimberly from Pleasanton? She has come also.

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

Oh Kell, please let me know when you plan to go again and maybe I can work it in. I just went back to the Doc. today expecting a for sure surgery date, but the insurance is giving us a hard time. They want me to have another cordisone shot to see if it helps. The last one didn't do anything, so they are now looking at the 6th of July for my surgery, so at least It gives me some more gardening and camping time this summer.
I was in Oregon visiting my youngest daughter's family. Wendy and I went to two nursery's while I was there. I was lucky to get to those two. It rained the entire time. But even though I didn't see one brug. I did find some new begonia's. The Brug. cuttings I rooted for my son in law last year are coming back up, so they were quite excited over that since they didn't put them in the garage over winter. I guess they get quite a bit colder in Eugene than we do here in the winter.

Patricia
