Anyone know about hibiscus pernambucensis??

Sunset Beach, NC(Zone 8a)

Saw this at a local nursery and tag had Hibiscus Pernambucensis (AKA Seaside Mahoe) and came home to "google". I can't find that much. The pics I found on web sites showed have dark green leaves. This one has variegated leaves and I see no reference to that on any sites. It's not blooming, but tag says the bloom is yellow to orange to red so it definitely sounds like that hibiscus.

The info I see on Seaside Mahoe doesn't really seem appropriate for this plant so I'm wondering if the supplier is a little mixed up with what was put on the tag. (No, that's never happened. Ha! Ha!)

Anyone have info on this? It's growing like a small tree so I'm thinking it will certainly loose all leaves in zone 8b then leaves come back in spring. Or is 8b not hardy enough for it to survive?

Thanks so-o-o much,
Barbara

sounds like Hib. tilliaceous mahoe variegated form. don't have a clue where he got the name for his at .
this is what they look like. I don't know if it is hardy outside of zone 10. might be.

Thanks, Kyle. The sites I looked at say there is a difference between the tillaceous and the pernambucensis in that the t. has a red eye center and the p. doesn't. But none of the websites reference variegated. I think you might be right about the hardiness so I'll probably pass.

Looked up that one. H. Pernambucensis seams only be native to Puerto Rico
Scroll down, under the us maps there is different hibiscuses listed. You can click on the name and get more info on each Hibiscus.

Janett, you are so sweet to go to all that trouble. The links were very helpful. I like to push the zones, but I'm thinking the label on the shrub might have be a little misleading and that it won't do well here in zone 8b. I think I will pass on buying it.

I have two variegated mahoe (can't tell you anymore detail than that) in pots for the past 2-3 years. Have been leery of leaving them out during winter. They have not bloomed, but worth it for the leaves. However, one may be too tall for the greenhouse this winter!

Hi Pam,
I did go ahead and buy one. You're right.....such neat leaves! I'm taking a chance of planting it in the ground (may be a mistake). Is yours in full sun??

Wish we could have chatted more at the swap. I'll get there on time next year and have plenty of time for all the fun!

Take a picture of it, I wanna see it. Where did you find it?

Paxton, FL(Zone 8a)

Yes, mine are in full sun. Rylaff, I found mine at a small nursery in Marianna a couple of years ago. Didn't know what it was ( and I don't think they did either), but just loved the leaves on it, so I bought two for about $6 bucks a piece I think. The tag on it just said mahoe or mahoe hibiscus. Didn't know it would get so tall either!

Sunset Beach, NC(Zone 8a)

Lisa, Here's a pic of it. I got it here locally for $25.50. They had one more (very comparable to mine) and if you would like to have it I will pick it up for you. I have to go to Niceville on Tuesday for a Drs. appt. so I'd be happy to drop it off somewhere for you.

Note the pinkish look of a couple of the leaves. The new growth starts that way and some are almost red and green variegated (look closely to right in photo).

Here's a look at the full "tree" --- probably about 3'-3 1/2' tall from the soil line.

gorgeous plant....gingerlily...did you get it at the secret garden in Marianna???

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

Wowee. That is georgeous. Yea, where did you get it? I might have to make a trip. I would hate for you to get it for me and then not be able to get it to me. My work hours these days are terrible. My boss resigned so I am doing her job and mine. Keeps me pretty busy. Sometimes I am at the hospital until seven or eight pm. But that is sweet of you to offer.

Sunset Beach, NC(Zone 8a)

At which hospital do you work? My appt. tomorrow is with Dr. Hruby (surgeon). Do you know who he is? Lisa, if you want it, I will get it then drop it off somewhere in Niceville that you can pick it up. You can just mail me a check if you decide you want me to drop it somewhere. It's at Eastern Lake Nursery on the west end of Hwy 30 A.

By the way, I forgot to tell you that I got 2 Chinese yellow bananas. (Is that the proper name?) Yea, you cost me those when you posted your gorgeous one so I might as well cost you by posting the picture of the sea mahoe! LOL!

I guess we are even then. I think I will take a cruise out there on my next day off. I love to go to nurseries.
Yea, I know Dr. Hruby. He used to come to our hospital (Fort Walton Beach Medical Center). He is a good surgeon. I am not sure why he stopped coming out here, but probably had a hard time juggling Twin Cities and Fort Walton. I think he only goes to Twin Cities now.

Sunset Beach, NC(Zone 8a)

Thanks for the feedback. People in the hospital systems always know the "scoop" on doctors. As an FYI, he is at Twin Cities and Sacred Heart in Sandestin (that's where I first saw him).

I'm still gonna' call you for that garden tour at your house. I need to get past this little problem first that I'm seeing Dr. Hruby for.

You'd like visiting Eastern Lake Nursery. It's small and a bit pricey (some things are very pricey), but they have been quite successful in ordering things for me from their sources. Did I tell you I did visit Crestview Nursery based on your recommendation?WOW! What a huge place!! I thought the prices were great!

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

Yea, I know. We should go "nursery hopping" some time.

Paxton, FL(Zone 8a)

"Weeds" , I don't know what the name of the nursery is. It is on 90 I think, on the east side of town.
