I just must share this !! I have a single 4 hole HB feeder set up but it was in a area not really visible from inside. During the past 3 days, I have noticed at least 4 birds competing for it, I wanted to watch them more closely, so decided to move the feeder . When I took it down one of the males buzzed me!! I set the bottle on the ground, put the hook up and picked up the bottle, just as I raised it chest high, he came back and tried to drink as I held the bottle!! Could not believe, as I stood there he fearlessly hoovered and sipped, flew away and CAME BACK!! When I put my hand near the feeding tubes he didn't panic, just hoovered, when I held my hand in position as a perch, he ACTUALLY SAT ON MY HAND AND SIPPED!!!
I believe small things are the most precious gifts ; the feel of that beautiful creature's tiny claws on my finger is one of those gifts!!
I was thrilled!!
WHOA!!! What a wonderful blessing for you to experience!!! I am so thrilled for you. Do you know what kind of hummer it was, because I want one, too. ;-)
I wonder if he has been conditioned to humans in some way or if he is simply that bold and territorial? Either way, that is too neat!
Thanks for sharing the blessing,
Kenya
Kenya, all I know is it was a beautiful bright green with a brilliant red throat.
I'm new to all this as I have spent the past 45 years captive in the business world, just retired last month and am discovering a whole new wonderful world that has existed in my city lot all this time that I never knew was there. l'm like a kid in a candy store-- every turn is agreat new adventure! So much to learn!!
Isn't nature awesomely wonderful??? I remember when I first learned how to identify plants and grasses back in college and that is when the door was opened for me to what nature had to offer in it's beauty. It added an entirely new dimension to my life and I am so thankful for it.
Welcome to this new season in your life. I retired almost two years ago myself and adore the freedom. Keep us posted as to all your new experiences--I for one will love to re-visit the thrill of first time discovery with you as you explore your city lot.
Sounds like your friend is a ruby-throated hummer. They are quite beautiful.
