Asiatic Lily 'Lollypop'
Lilium

Late May and it's already set buds.

I see you have protection around some of your plants. I had a problem with something eating mine. They were eaten from the ground up and then the stem would be eaten through and the remaining plant would fall over. Then they came back and polished off the rest. I think it may be bunnies because the cage I put around my last plant had a small bent up spot on the bottom that I didn't discover until it was too late. A small animal could have squeezed under it. What else eats lilies and what is your suggestion for keeping animals out?

I just use cages like the ones in the picture made out of window screen or chicken wire. I've had them chewed and fall over the same way yours did. I think mine were done in by squirrels or chipmunks though. I've also found grated irish Spring soap sprinkled around the plants keep squirrels away from the freshly planted bulbs.

Hope this helps,
Steve

Thanks Steve. Since the little varmints have done in my plants for this season, I'm hoping the lilies will have enough energy to return next summer. We live on a lake in north Central Minnesota so there are probably going to be other challenges ahead. I was so looking forward to the asiatic lilies coming up. I planted 18 of them along the bank of our shoreline naturalizing them into the grass that the mower couldn't reach. Well, I'll try the soap next year and protect them with screens and if all goes well I'll post a picture when they bloom.

Thanks Again.

Your welcome :) The area where you planted them sounds quite nice. I never thought of naturalizing lilies, but it's a really good idea. If you want more this year you could always check the garden centers, they usually have them flowering in pots mid summer, so you could pick a few up. Just an idea :)

You know, I think I should check that out. That would probably cure my disappointment too. Or I could make some squirrel or rabbit stew. On second thought I'll try the soap and the screens.

I bought a citronella in a pot...I think 4 years ago, and it's done very well doubling almost in size each year. And since your lilies are growing naturalized you could hide the screens very easily in the taller grass and you wouldn't have to see them like mine.
