Look what jumped into my basket!!
Lipstick and Goldfish plants
NOW!!!! How do I take care of these wonderful plants?
Never had either before, but knew there was discussion on them at the forum. Someone please give me some simple advise. I would like to keep them a long time.
I wrote up on their care not long ago... i'll see if it can be fount. I have variegated plants growing outside from cuttings from Laurie and Bob
You need to talk to Lorry, lol!!
I keep mine in east or west windows....they don't like to be overwatered, but if they dry out completely they suffer from terrible leaf loss.
Some of them like more humidity than others.....but the more humidity you can provide, the better.
Feed them a low dose (sort of like with orchids, weakly, weekly) during the spring and summer, and you should see blooms.
Oops..posted at the same time, there, Allison!

Thanks, guys. Guess I need to find the perfect spot for them.
I have mine with special grow light, dry side but not dry, like food and light to bloom, and humidity.
~ The Lipstick Plant ( Aechynanthus )(various species of Aeschynanthus) is also widely grown, and it is not uncommon to see Goldfish Plants (usually Nematanthus species and hybrids) for sale in supermarkets and garden centers. ~
Same care as for violets, but will tolerate more light and less water.
Thrives in warm nights, and seems to bloom somewhat better potbound.
Aeschynanthus pulcher and A. parviflorus, both red flowering are often called the lipstick-plant.
Highly recommended for the novice with a bright window, since they are very tolerant of neglect and are virtually indestructible

Although the relatively common "Lipstick Plant" (Aeschynanthus species) is attractive and easy to grow, other members of this genus also make good basket plants. A. ‘Big Apple’ is an example of a recent hybrid that has achieved great popularity.
Excellent link here from Gerneriads reference Web..

Grow these plants cooler than Av's at 55 to 60 day and night 10 less. Let them get dryer than Av's before watering, and provide the same amount of light. They thrive in same amount of soil mixtures. Columeneas are not so well suited to florescent culture as are many other gesneriaids. I did not relize there were two plants so here's info on the second !
They are pretty. I want a goldfish plant, I think they are just adorable!
Nan, I really like your advise. simple and sweet. Thanks. Right now I have them both in a West by Northwest window. We'll see how they do.
Thanks, everyone.
hehe ok MY LOVES!
I adore these plants :)
They are so easy and forgiving :) I can neglect them and they still love me :)
But seriously..I treat them a lot like AVs..with the exception that they get regular foliar spray showers also :)
they like light :) and pretty much the same thing as Avs..dont' overwater them :)
I have the variegated goldfish plant and just ADORE how he has several different types of leaves on one plant!
I also have a couple lipstick plants :)
I have read if over watered you will lose leaves.
Sorry Nanna guess I like a little History and know about what I have :))
Simple ~ Columnea ( Goldfish plant)
Aechynanthus ~ The Lipstick Plant Treat them like Av's Yippee
