Wanted: Capsicum annuum var aviculare, Chiltepin.

Northern Michigan, MI(Zone 5a)

I have tried unsuccessfully to start this plant from seed several times over. I know the germination can be quite lengthy but nothing happens. I've tried peat pellets, soil and a perlite mix. I've pre-soaked seeds and used dry seeds...lol. It's very frustrating.

I've heard that it is a very common plant native to Texas and was hoping perhaps someone in that region might dig me up a small start plant or two and send it for postage. I know with my season it would have to be an indoor plant but that would be ok for me.

Many thanks !!!

The germ time is long but they also like some bottom heat(75-80) with out that they sometimes never germ. It has taken my Guajilla and Pasilla 3 weeks to germ and that was with bottom heat! Habaneros the same, also Some of the other SW chilis. Chiltipen is the only one I did not grow this yr, post on the Pepper forum too

Jab, are you talking about the itty bitty hot as hades pepper that grows wild here? We call it pequin pepper. I pull them out of my garden all the time. I can send you some plants if I haven't pulled them all up.(just wait a few days, there will be more, lol. The birds love them)

Northern Michigan, MI(Zone 5a)

Calalily, I do believe that is the one I'm talking about...lol. I'm trying to put the file link that has a pic to see if we are talking of the same plant......

I'm not sure if my attempt at a hyperlink will work, I am a lil challenged when it comes to doing that. http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/31752/index.html

Chicory31, I will try some bottom heat and see if it helps my attempts. I bought the seed from Tomato Growers earlier this spring.

Yes, that's them. The birds LOVE them, drop the seeds everywhere. I'll dig you up some. Here they need a little shade, but up there they'll probably do good in full sun.
I've seen the bushes get 8-10 ft tall if we don't get a frost for a few years!

Have a great weekend !!!!!!!!!

Jab, I have some. I checked this weekend then forgot to come back and post. I found several seedlings and even found one with a woody stem(it's been there a while) but don't know if I can get it out of the holly bush it's growing beside.

When you think you're ready to send some just shoot me a D-mail with how much I owe you for postage etc....

Appreciate your efforts greatly !!!

Just bumping this back up to the top. Still hoping get a small started plant.

Had thought I found success when I saw a tiny sprout in one of my pots. I had put this one pot outside in full afternoon sun thinking what have I got to lose since none of the others have sprouted. The tiny sprout turned out to be a blade of grass...lol.

Oh well still trying........

Hope everyone has a great holiday weekend !!!

Hope you had a good 4th of July !!!

**bump bump**

Just wanted to bring this back up because I'm still hopeful to get one of these , rumor has it they grow wild like weeds in places like Texas......lol. So if you're driving along and happen to see this "weed" growing along side the road snatch it for me and I'll send ya postage =0)

peppercrazyaz sent me some fresh seeds and I'm still trying to get a sprout from either those or the seeds I purchased from tomato growers this past winter. I think my problem is I can't seem to fool the seed into believing it's in a southern clime...lol.

If Calalily didnt send you any I will look in my pasture for some small ones I can send , the ones in the flower beds are too big and those are the ones I use to make my hot sauce for DH

i didnt plant any this year but they seem to take alot of work to get to germinate.

i put them in a peat pellet and ziploc baggy in the window.(creating a little greenhouse) they are hard to start here and i know i have enough heat for them. dont over water the seed though keep moist but not overly wet and dont cover it but with a touch of soil.

keep trying the seeds

i have also found the fresher the seeds the better germ rate.

imzadi~ I've tried the peat pot and the baggie scenario in various pots...lol. So far no go. I've heard they are the dickens to germinate so I'm not taking it personal I just keep on trying...lol.

emh48~ No nobody has sent any yet and if you're out and about and see any in the pasture I'd be happy to take them off your hands =0)
