Can anyone tell me what these tall stemed purple perenials are in the background? They are self seeding and I wonder if they will be able to self seed for next year now that I have put 4" of mulch around them!

Looks like Allium to me, too. A member of the onion family, they generally grow from bulbs planted in the fall. Need some sun and well drained soil. Many different varieties. Lot's of fun.
