New member looking to "try out" Brugs

Cincinnati, OH

Hi everyone. I just recently signed up and have been looking for information and advice on Brugs, as well as any seeds or cuttings, if available. I have wanted these for the longest time, they are simply beautiful, but have been afraid to try. Are they difficult to grow in containers? I know they would not be cold hardy, and since I live in Ohio, I figured containers would be my best bet, but I am not very adept at container growing. I am a better flower gardener, in a regular bed. Any response would be appreciated.

Thanks a bunch,

Kelly

Hi Kelly,

I am very new to Brugs. but have been reading and reading both the current forum as well as the classic threads. One thing I have learned is this gardening group is so helpful and will respond to all questions. Someday, I may be able to help myself, but for now I am still reading and reading. :) At present, I have 4 Brugs. and some seeds on the way to work with this winter; and with all my research, I still feel like a fish out of water. Hope I've learned the basics and can keep my plants alive. Good luck!

For a start -

Most will die back to ground if it gets to or near freezing , but if you put alot of mulch they come back the next year . Alot of people here move them to garage or basement in winter .
Just start reading the posts here and when you have time read old posts . I try to read everything that is posted on the same day to keep track of where I am . For example - read everything posted today and yesterday . tomorrow read eveything posted and then what was posted Friday .
I am back to June of 2004 .
I bookmark the page and then open that bookmark and go backwards the next time .
this will give you an idea of what the smells are like .

By the way , there are no dumb questions , just the ones I have not asked .

Thanks for the info!! I am so looking forward to starting some. I Hopefully found a good deal on ebay for a starter. We'll see. Hope I don't screw this up. BTW, if I start my Brug this year will it bloom this year? Can I leave it in the ground in Ohio? I thought I would have to move it in.

I don't think they will be hardy for you in Ohio. When I lived in TN, some froze out even with heavy mulch. Plus, the ones left in the ground do not start to come up until the ground warms up and won't flower till probably August. If you don't have room for the big plants, take several cuttings to root and keep inside over the winter.

Hi Kelly,

Welcome to the boards and to brugs. I am not new to Dave's, but have
recently delved back into Brugs after many years without one. I've been
busy growing other things, LOL.

I'm happy to see all the new folks asking questions, because I'm paying
attention, too!

:-)
