dahlias rotted

(Zone 7b)

Anybody have a good supplier for dahlia tubers here in Canada? I got most of mine from friends, neighbours, etc, over the years, and they did just fine until we left ours in the ground for the second year last winter, and out of all my beauties, only 3 made it - sob!

We had torrential amounts of rain last winter, way more than usual, and they are just mush. It's heartbreaking.

I lost my favourite of all, "Castle Drive" - think I've posted this pic last summer. It's too late for the dahlia club sales here on the island, and the stores are empty!

Can't stand the idea of a big empty spot in my garden, where that glorious display used to be...

So sorry to hear about you losing you Dahlias. :( As shown in your photo, Castle Drive is a beautiful formal decorative specimen. I can only imagine your disappointment.

You could try Botanus or Veseys. Good luck.

Oh my goodness, and they are close to me too! Now that site is a dahlia lover's paradise!!

Many thanks,

I don't know about Port Alberni, but in Victoria people bring their overs to the Victoria Hort Society meetings, first Tuesday of every month - for swopping and selling.

You might also see if there is a freecycle in Pt. Alberni. You might find some there.

Mine all froze first year I was here in Manitoba. The basement was too cold. Grouch.

Such a shame Cheryl.. I hope you can find some of your favourites again. Maybe some of the nurseries wil carry potted dahlias?

I've just been looking at Ferncliff Gardens's website - now that is a dahlia lover's paradise, and lots of them for very reasonable prices, too!

Now I just have to restrain my greed, eh?

Little late in the season for this, but there is always next year. Place in Seachelt called Dahlias Galore. Have ordered from them and they do mail order. Lynn

Hi Lynn,

Just saw this now, sorry, airhead time - I couldn't find them - when I googled it, and clicked, I got "This page cannot be displayed" do you have the url for them yourself, please please?

Haven't had very good luck with Veseys myself.

I've never left dahlias in the ground over winter. It's just too cold here in Ottawa. I lift them, store them in the basement and divide for new growth in the spring. Same with cannas, caladiums, tuberous begonias, etc.

Hi got the same result as you . So here is the next best thing.
Dahlias Galore
5245 Selma Park Rd. Sechelt, B.C. Phone # 604 885 9820
Was just in Sechelt last weekend and saw the sign on the road end, so still in business. I bought and paid for some in Sept last year and they mailed in the spring. Prices are reasonable too. Lynn

(Zone 7b)

Thanks very much, Lynn, I shall contact them and see if I can get a price list.

Hi Did you get some info from Dahlias Galore? I only want to pass on good info. Lynn

(Zone 7b)

Hi Lynn,

No reply as of yet, but the mail is so slow, who knows when they got it, right?

If you can wait until 2007, take a look at Gardenimport's spring catalogue. They ship all over Canada. I got big, healthy Dahlia tubers from Gardenimport last year that grew like the dickens (only to be felled by a summer storm - my fault - I didn't stake them well enough).
