Can anybody help me with this name, I picked up what must be over $1000 worth of palms on the street today from a house renovation
two huge palms , (over 10 feet from tip of palms to base of roots and 4 feet wide) I was told they were called cat tail palms,
a huge arica (spelling)
and a big clump of lady palms.
I cant find any references on line to Cat tail palms im trying to figure out where to put them.
Ill try to get pictures tomorrow.
It is unusual that the root ball which is huge and seems to have long tubers that have been cut ,is at a 45degree angle to the plant, Looks like it was grown in a corner and the palms grew outward towards the light, ( do I have to plant it the same way or would they straighten out .
The cat tails are the only ones left out of the ground now .
I watered them and left the root ball and left it covered with wet blankets over night,
If anybody can help or give advice on replanting It would appreciated.
Cat tail palm
Cat palms are Chamaedorea cataractarum... see if that looks like your palm (look in the Plant files). But never heard it called 'Cat Tail' palm. Can be planted at whatever angle you want it at.
thanks bob
I think they look the same too dark to check now, Cant believe my luck , Just checked it out and it says needs part sun to shade so I have just the place for one of them at least,
would you mind answering one more question for me.
The root ball is about 5 feet long , big long tuber things with short hard pencil width size stubbs stubbs comming out along the tops.
should I plant it straight down in a deep hole and wait for the palm fronds to straighten ,the fronds will be bending away from me like the back of a wave (or is it best to put it in at the angle it seemed to be gowing at,more horizontal with the ground, Kind of hard to explain without a pic.
ill try to get pictures in the morning, after I go back for more stuff, having trouble sleeping trying to figure what im going to do with them all.
An elderly mad owned the house and tended his large garden for 40 years, the new owners litterally removed everything with a backhoe grass and all and put it on the street.
Separating the rootball will be tricky, as that is a single plant... may end up killing all you separate away. Rec: if possible, to dig a hole in the rock and stuff it in... .or get yourself a huge pot.
What about trimming the base of the roots.

I have no experience doing that, and most palms don't like that done... but couldn't say for sure about this species. That is quite an old plant and those stalks are usually mostly underground, though look like they' ve been above ground for years. This is considered normally a stemless plant, but yours has stems. Nice. As for direction of planting, that really doesn't matter.
Well
Thanks Bob I got one in the ground todaywith no trimming, We will see if she takes, going to get some palm feed tomorrow, and try to get the other one in.
