I've started hanging epiphytes in trees since I'm running out of room everywhere else. Don't know the name of this one.
Epis in trees
They are lovely, especially like the pale pink!! This is certainly closer to how they would grow in the wild......somewhere on Ursula's site, I seem to remember a shot of them in the wild in Ghyana......hopefully she will pop in and share the link to that picture.
The pink one is the Nopalxochia phyllanthoides, aka Deutsche Kaiserin!! You are growing your Epis very well!! What a beautiful plant!
Here is the link Candy is referring to

I also saw Epis growing in trees at Iguazu next to the huge waterfalls in Brazil and on top of houses in Guyana. It is natural for them to be in trees like that. I wish I could do that year around!!
Stunning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks, katrun! It is pretty neat. And thanks for the ID, RUK.
Your plants are Beautiful!! Mine have been in Winter storage and are just now setting buds, they will be nothing like that though.
What beautiful plants!! I can't wait!! Wonderful placement of them as well...very natural looking.
Just had a question for anyone to answer; do u plant these epi's in the tree itself? Add potting mix to a hole in the tree? Im real curious about growing epi's & broms in trees
Anaid - I believe they're potted and hung in the tree...maybe post your question in a new thread so folks notice it.
I have to add as well - I think they are happier up there!! this was one of the first out of the lot of my Epis to bloom (most all of them have buds) - all those growing in or on the trees have many more buds than all the rest, even if they are just hanging up in their pots;)
I guess this makes sense since its much closer to their natural growing environment- anyone else have an opinion?!
That is beautiful......
I hang mine in the trees over summer. Are you able to leave yours outside year round? How do you attach the ones growing on the trees?
Betty
Betty, year round works well usually here in sunny san diego, though this year we had our first freeze in years(only breifly one night!) and some plants were hurt, none died;) - I think I was very lucky compared to many Dgers out there;(
I also think though they may be blooming later this year because of my lack of a greenhouse during the freeze!
Most of the Epis are still in their baskets but...
This Oxypetalum is growing in chicken wire and coconut fiber mixed with moss (the moss is mostly around the orchids while the epi sits in a crevis filled with soil/barkmix held in by the wire & fiber)
by the way, I would love to know how anyone is hanging theirs on fences! I would love to try this - jooolster yours is absolutly beautiful!
This is another pic of my only tree (which is luckily very large!) with all the Epis and Hoyas hanging out...the OxyP is growing in a crevis of the tree right next to this which was chopped mercilessly by the previous owner.
(Our yard is such a mess , we are working daily to clean it up & I really hope to have lovely gardens soon - especially before the horrible summer heat, I never knew shade was such a luxory!)
Very pretty. My SiL in Florida has Eppies growing in her trees year round. Makes me want to move. LOL
Mine are in pots and hang in the basement or GH over winter. I am just starting to bring them out. I have Never had blooms like yours. One of the pinks set a lot of buds but I accidentally broke off the section with all the buds. It is starting to set buds again so maybe I'll get spring buds on it. I have a red one that is still in the GH that has some full buds ready to open. I hope to get it outside tomorrow.
This is my Pink from last summer, it's hanging in a tree in the yard.
Betty
