Hi!
I would like to know if anyone grows their herbs organically. If so, what brand of pesticide do you use on your herbs?
I
organic pesticide???
aren't organic and pesticides oxymorons?
No, roganic uses chemicals (soaps) that are not harmful to wildlife or fish.
I think that you're probably thinking of Neem oil. It's supposed to be good for black spot on roses as well. The only problem is that you need to keep spraying it at intervals because it doesn't actually kill a lot of insects (seems to be lethal to lily beetle larvae though. Yay!) It generally repels a lot of the insects and if they aren't repulsed by it and eat your treated plants, it messes up their reproductive systems.
Thank you Mc Cool!
Are pyrethrums considered organic? There's a product by "Safer" that combines insecticidal soap with pyrethrum (which I think is made from chrysanthemums?), and it's my first line of defense against "bad" insects (well, other than knocking aphids off plants with a hard spray of water from the hose). Although I don't always stop with "gentler methods" I figure they're at least a good place to start.
If you wish to be organic, make sure the product says pyrethrum and not pyrethroids which is synthetic pyrethrum.
Good distinction, Mobi -- thanks!
I wonder, are the synthetic pyrethoids more toxic than the naturally derived pyrethrum, or are they just not officially organic? If they're similar compounds, then either one might be OK unless you are going for organic certification.
Here's where I found some info. But it doesn't really address your question

Thanks!
