One Bud!

My big epi (QOTN) has a bud! Since it has been at my sister's all winter and under-cared for, I was sure it wouldn't bloom this year.

She has never seen a bloom so maybe she will like them better when this one blooms.

Congrats, Darius! Please post pics when it opens! Yay! I didn't get my first round of blooms until July last year so you are way ahead of me:-)

Bloom has trippled in size, yet not nearly what it will get to be.

I also have 1 bud on an orchid cactus...I bought a cutting ( one leaf ) last May at a yardsale type setting, brought it home and it has grown beautifully...I then puchased a few online...they are all growing nicely...I have no idea what I am doing though...they are in my greenhouse I allow then to dry out after watering and I fertilize weakly with each watering...is that okay???

Thanks for your advise!

Rats! Took a closer look just now and I think it opened last night and I missed it.

Yup. If the petals are opened at all, you missed it. Not to worry, it might bloom again. The sign of immenent bloom is when the flower makes the big hook. Temperatures also play a part in how fast a bloom fades. The ones for me that open in September or October will stay open until almost noon. The ones that open in the summer are gone before dawn. FWIW, when they open, you can cut it and take it in. If you leave it on the plant, it will be spent by morning, same thing if you cut it, but you can have the fragrance in the house if you cut some and take them in.

sudhira - No expert on fertilizer, but I use fish emulsion at 1/2 potency every other week, the rest of the time they enjoy the misters - I use fertilizer similar to this on all my plants, i find they like less more regularly than more all at once - the fish em. is great too because it works on SOOO many other plants so I just have to mix up one batch every time i water!
I too am new to epis - but have picked up a lot of helpful tips out of these forums, thanks guys!!
